Default FM Link tune help, software request also...

First, let me introduce me and my car…I’m French so sorry for my English, I’ll try to do my best ;-)
Miatist since 2008, initially with an NBFL 1.8 BV6, finally a MSM without turbo and with longer ratio, oups ! Some chassis improvement and some trackdays after, I changed for a 1996 NA8, fitted with Tein flex, full roll cage, front wilwood 4 pots and also a full FM2 setup :

GT2560R on cast manifold, heavy intercooler with steel piping, FM downpipe with high flow catalytic, 2.5” FM dual exhaust, 550cc injectors and dual feed rail…AEM wideband, Autometer gauges for boost/EGT/oil temp, and a wonderfull FM link (tell me if you need anymore specs !)

The map was done by the initial owner, boost is set at 12 psi, and it was on dyno in 2003 like that :

IDLE and startup are really fine, like OEM, but I’ve begin to look at the map, because my EGT are a little high, reach 900°C on some tracks or hillclimb…so I request your advices about what I’ve found in here :

(IGN value divided by 4, to have it in degree)

AFR target looks quite low, regarding to Flyin Miata recommendations…no ? If I’m right, fuel table will adjust automatically, but I’ll need to make a coarse/fine tuning if I change AFR target, exact ?

IGN table will change also no ? or is there any way to minimize a little the timing advance, to lower EGT ?

An other enquiry : I’ll try to source a PC with at least XP (I’m on a macbook…)and a serial port or usb/serial adapter, to log through the serial link, but softwares looks down, datalogfab especially, rtlink etc…did anyone have the files available ?

Thanks a lot !

You are way too rich according to that dyno sheet. IMO the easiest thing to do is back off the fuel in those zones and then data log, adjust and repeat as necessary. Too much fuel will raise EGT as the burn is still active while the exhaust port is opened- and often lapses into the runner. Listen for knock when pulling fuel and adjust your IGN accordingly. If you can find an old palm 500, you can use a free app called plink that connects to the Link serial adapter to data log. Then transfer those files over to a windows vm on the mac.

btw- aeronautical standards typically list 1600F+ turbine intake temps (TiT). Where are you measuring> preturbine or post? in the collector? They all change the EGT reading. I would not regard EGT as the "end all" but as another indicator that something may be wrong. I don't think 1600F pre turbine in the collector is evidence of anything significantly wrong. Here's a good read on EGT.

Thanks for these quick answer !

If I cannot log in a first time, I'll at least make a video of the AFR when doing a WOT...because i'm really not sure that it's still on 10.5 AFR, more about 12.5/13, but thats difficult to check when driving

I didnt mention but for sure I have the keypad...

When you tell pulling fuel and adjust IGN, you mean to correct the lambda target then tune coarse/fine, or the best way to tune through the keypad is different ??

Your lambda targets are for auto tuning (which I didn't bother with on my Link) and reference when reviewing the log. So it makes sense to set them up. IMO it's far easier to drive around and focusing on "hitting" all your different zones with your driving while logging. Then adjusting your tune while reviewing the log. That means check each zone against the logged AFR and adjust the fuel accordingly. Repeat the process until you've hit your target.

thanks...but for that, i need a PC laptop (instead of my macbook) AND the software...

does anybody have the files requested to log/tune a FM Link ??

I had some misfires around 3/4k rpm under wot, changed the ignition cables and spark plugs…which were fitted as 1.1mm !! (0.043”)
I put some new BKR7E11 gapped at 0.8 (0.030”) + Magnecor KW85 and now its perfectly smooth… YES !!

My AFR are nicely stable from 3.5k rpm to 7k, at 12.5 ! A little high finally, no ?

Oil cooler also fitted, no more than 205/210 F now (was going up to 240 under highway/track use !) but pressure is lower under 1500 rpm…

Some troubles are getting fixed now…with a nice map that would be perfect !

You need a Windows virtual machine setup on your macbook. Oracle's VirtualBox is free. Surely you can find a Windows XP (or newer) install somewhere in the French Alps.

FM has a free download for Data Log Lab

They had a key generator link on their site before the redesign- which would make it free forever. But you get a 30 trial after install anyway.

well, dataloglab.com is down and on FM thats full of 404, so after some bad links, here is data log lab 1.5.7 :

Index of /mirror/svn/tools/DataLogLab/

(in order to avoid any mistakes, i made a lot of reserch, but for exemple, this recent post : https://www.miataturbo.net/ecus-tuni...d-where-74259/ link to a 404 too...)

EDIT : Thanks a lot m2cupcar, nice link !! I'll try to have a key too

Using web archive, here is the data log lab website, but not so much informations here...

Will I need RTLink finally ?! thats requested to see value in live, right ?

about Plink on a palm, here was a mod you tell about :
https://www.miataturbo.net/ecus-tuni...e2/#post529056 but also 404 :-/

edit : and here you post a still available link :

RTLink- yes if you want to see live data, but I never used it, so can't tell you much more than that.

Some good news...now i have the usb-serial adapter, DLL key generator and soft, and anything to make a virtual win on my macbook...i'll be able to make some log

in between, i made an interpolation with the FM value for lambda target value for an AEM with display, regarding the AFR for each pressure :

WTF with -6 psi extreme mpg aim ?!!

And it's a little hard under boost no ? i'm at 12psi control boost/waste gate so under WOT I'm actually at 12.5/12.6 AFR ...

Please confirm :
Im always with lambda L3 ON, if I change and store different lambda target (Z26 to z31), it will auto tune the ZF100-675 right ? do I need to store at the end of the run to avoid a new auto tune each time I drive it ?!

For the Zi table, how is it managed ?? any comment on the actual value ? maybe also too agressive, regarding the lambda target setup

If anybody can confirm the way to configure/map, i'll do some log with actual map, change to something more +6PSI : AFR 12.5 / +12 PSI : AFR 12, or maybe 0.5 less, to lower EGT, then log again !

I don't have any comments on the keypad or autotune since I didn't use them. I logged on the palm, reviewed and adjusted the map file on the pc using datalog lab, then loaded the revised map file to the link using the palm. You could do the same by just leaving the pc (mac) in the car and driving/logging/adjusting/loading. IMO it's way easier to drive around hitting most of the zones and then building your map file from the logs.

thanks for your help again...

that would be great to adjust through the keypad, but that's a little obscur !

by adjusting on DLL, you mean changing the whole fuel table or lambda target only ?
how to manage with the ign table ? any comment on my values ?
regarding to the map, the original owner/mapper may have been a little aggressive...i want to take care about that too ^^

well, I passed through FM Ecu tuning manual again, sorry if that seems obvious for some Link-keypad users, but lets clear some points :

- both for fuel live tuning or ignition auto-reduction, if no store is done before shutdown, data are not stored and returned to initial value when start up. OK !!

- so I can change lambda target, coarse-fine tune and then store, make a paper-pen log at least, and smooth the fuel table values...then do it again...

- ignition is reduced if there is some knock, DLL can log also any knock and its possible to restore 1/3 of the safety reduction without issue...

- FM consider that 22 degree is a safe maximum for torque peak value...i have much more, but I ran a '96 NA8 with low CR and here gasoline has 98octane rate, note 91...which maximum value will you consider ?
On a long run (back from trackday, long road with cruise and some boost), i didnt have any knock, strange or normal ? How to be sure that the knock sensor is working fine ??

I'll have to read one more time again, about Lambda correction

one thing I cannot explain.... "Try to hold the car in a particular zone until the plus or minus sign turns into an equal sign. Each zone usually tunes within 2 to 4 seconds."

A zone correspond to a pressure and a rpm, if I stay at +6PSI or +12PSI, i'll never stay at the same RPM range 2 to 4 seconds, never ever !!

FM's IGN map is very conservative. My max timing at 1 bar was 19° at ~5500rpm on 91 octane pump gas. I can't recall what it was at peak torque (more important).

The manual is telling you maintain a constant load on the engine to hold it in the current zone so that the LINK can check the AFR with the WBO2 against your lambda target until it makes the adjustment. It's not an easy job for one person IMO. That's why I didn't use auto tune. I just went out and logged a 4th gear pull from 1500-7000rpm. It was far easier and quicker to make the corrections sitting in front of my computer at home.

Macbook/virtual box/win xp/DLL/usb to serial ready to log

User, not ready to run DLL ^^ is there anything to change in the soft configuration ? I’ve already changed the miata type to match my 1.8 NA, but nothing else ??

Your method looks nice, especially when alone to run the car, but with your WOT log, you’ll only have the value for high level boost…to interpolate on lower boost, how do you do, auto tune and fine adjustment by hand ?

No connection to the LINK from the Mac? Modulate your throttle to control boost.
