Default Webby goes ice racing-non Miata content

Here is the rented steed, a modified Menard tire class VW Golf:

It has 155-13" studded ice racing tires.

If you want to skip ahead, you can hear the results of a hung throttle at 5:05. The hung throttle was fixed and I went back out to finish up the race. This was my first time on the ice, the first time I even saw the car was when we were unloading on the lake.

If anyone gets the opportunity to do a little ice racing, do so. It's a lot of fun.

+1. I guess the part which makes the wipers return to down position was removed in the effort to shave every ounce for maximum performance. But, I really thought you guys would pick on me for:

I think that was a Saab. The what the **** part is that that guy had me pwned too long in this heat, then for like 5+ laps in the next heat. He was chopping the apexes then tracking out wide, I finally dive bombed him on one of the tight corners, only to hit an apex cone. That's an automatic black flag/stop and go . I thought for sure I hit him driver's door, but he said I didn't. He let me right by in the feature.

I had GPS datalogging running for most of the sessions, I ended up with a fast lap of 1.10.5. In the feature, I got passed by the class leaders on the last lap, so they were 5-6 seconds per lap faster than me. More interestingly, the car's owner ran a heat in the car, and I logged him. He was two seconds faster than I was. My max g loading was .7g, this on glare ice, top speed was ~65 mph.

BTW, the camera's battery crapped out after this heat.

I've always wanted to try this, they setup a huge course near my family's cottage and it's been tempting.

I should head up and take a scooby from the local dealer for a test drive .

+1. First data I pulled was from this session, between the start of this one and the end of the day, I was ~7 seconds faster at the end. These cars/tires like a wicked yaw angle. The guys that I was with were the class leaders, and also really good SCCA SRF competitors. They kept telling me, less brake, more rotation. The car rotated well under trailing throttle, trailing brake just made it plow. By the end of the day, I would say I was at a consistent 25-30* yaw angle on every corner. The top guys would be at like 45*, even on the full throttle sweeper that was part of the 'straight.'
