Default Trackspeed Engineering's Turbo Miata @ Thunderhill July 23/24, 2011

We were at Thunderhill this weekend with SCCA running our 350whp "time attack" car (in quotations because I think I get disqualified from time attack if the car is capable of finishing two 30 minute races in a weekend ). The car runs in the catch-all ITE class, so our competition included a pair of very fast FD Rx7s, a turbocharged NSX, a couple of Porsches, and more.

The first race didn't start out well - the passenger door latch malfunctioned and Nick had to start from pit lane, behind the second group from the split start. It did make for some great video, and Nick worked his way up to 4th in class.

http://www.vimeo.com/26857190 (maudez, how do I embed this?)

Uploading the second race of the weekend now, I'll post the link today. It went much better, started 3rd in class and finished 2nd.

Die in a fire. The latch got bent and didn't engage the hoop fully. I had to reach in and push on stuff inside the door to actually get it to catch. First time it's ever acted up like that.

Youtube videos have to be less than 15-minutes. Fail fail fail, everyone knows this.

With a full tank of fuel and driver, just over 2200lbs.

Oops.... I may have. He was moving over into me, getting close to pushing me off track (in order for me to avoid contact); very obvious he was oblivious and had no idea I was there.... and it wasn't the first time he had done it that weekend.

The first smack was me starting to warm the tires. The rest were me hoping the door would actually shut so I could start the race. It crossed my mind to loosen the harness and reach over to close it, but I knew there was an issue with the latch and that I wouldn't be able to simply pull the door shut.

I feel the need to purchase something from Trackspeed after watching that.

Fail, fail, fail... YT just takes some time and they upgrade you, I guess. Here's a 25min video of absolute boring awesomeness of ME (I linked it so as not to shame the OP with my awesomeness - yeah right, like that's ever gonna happen!) Actually, 14:55 is a cool place to start when I press TSE's BBK braking beyond it's limits - then again, I was on Carbotech XP12s and I'm a shitty driver... right into the kitty litter...

That was an awesome run by Nick - when we gonna see you Sav? I dream of the day of some w2w action

Edit, dam. even the posting a link embeds... cool.

Looks great guys, although I'd hate to drive it in stop go traffic, looks like a bear down low.

Am I right in saying that was either a cold/dusty track or you need more tire? Looked all over the place.

The track was way off, probably from the heat (~95*F). The fastest SMs were in the 2:09.5 range, with a normal pole time of ~2:07 and a record of 2:06. Nick was in the 1:59s all weekend, which is definitely not as fast as the car should go there.

I'm going to play with the suspension setup this week and I'll be at Buttonwillow (Sat) and Streets of Willow (Sun) this weekend with the car, then back to Thunderhill in 2 weeks. Someday I will get off my *** and get my SCCA license too.

Sunday afternoons race resulted in this:

And the video footage below. Slightly less exciting since I'm not working through traffic, and I make a few more mistakes due to the afternoon heat.

Wow, San Francisco region must have more money for trophies than the regions around here. None of my first place trophies from national races are that nice...

I got credit towards races this year based on the amount of entry fees I paid last year because SFR is run well and profitable every year with money to spare. Also the reason Thunderhill's facilities are always improving, as Thunderhill is owned/built by SFR SCCA.

Nick, at about 12:10 you flipped a switch on your dash. What was it? Afterburners?

That guy in the 928 wanted his spot back. He spent some time in your mirror. I didn't realize that those big cars handled so well.

That switch is for the Racepak to scroll through the screens. I was seeing sensor data before and wanted to switch to the screen that showed me lap times and the predictive lap timer so I had to hit the switch to the right a couple times to get through the engine parameter screens.
