03 SE worth $5k?
Hi there, hopefully I will be able to join the miata club soon! Just looking something fun to drive for the next 6-8 months and maybe sell off in the summer.
I'm looking at a 143k mile 2003 Special Edition, which looks to be in average shape with a newer top, but carfax lists it as having had a "Moderate" damage crash 3 years ago.
I can get it for close to $4800-5000 before tax/title. Is that worth it? NADA/KBB is $5600/$5300.
According to carfax:
"SEVERE/TOTALED: The vehicle cannot be driven from the accident scene due to severe damage or an injury. This level of damage often results in a Salvage or Junk title.
MODERATE: The accident damage affects the operation of the vehicle and/or its parts. Examples include broken windows, trunk lids, doors, bumpers and tires.
MINOR: The accident damage does not affect the operation of the vehicle. Examples include dented bumpers, fenders, grills and body panels. This level of accident should not compromise vehicle safety."

Have you put eyes on the vehicle yet? With that many miles and some unknown damage I'd pass. That sounds like a $3500 Miata.
Where are you located? what does the average Miata go for in your area?
Close to a body of water or snow = the need to look for rust. In what condition are the wheels and tires, the brakes, radio/speakers, repaint job, interior...etc all this has to be factored in. You say its only for a few months till you ditch it anyway, do you care?
I would keep looking. Depending on your whereabouts you should be able to find a better deal.
