Default New member- saying hi!

Hello everyone,

I’ve been registered and poking around the forum for a few months now to soak up as much of the knowledge here for my turbo build and figure it was time to introduce myself.

I’ve had a stock ’91 n/a for a couple of years now and was enjoying racing it in auto-x in its stock form when I fell into a very good deal on one of the older Greddy kits that was never used by its previous owner. For the past year its been sitting in a box until I finally got serious and started researching and purchasing all of the supporting parts to correctly support a turbo setup.

Recently, the MSPNP2 was added along with an LC-1 so that I could learn to tune the car in ‘stock’ form before introducing all of the variables of a turbo system. Once you get used to how the tunerstudio operates and watch a few videos on youtube, you’ve got a good foundation to work off of. Based on some of the tables on this site, I feel that the tune I incorporated is pretty good given that it returns ~32-33mpg and is definitely quicker than the stock tune.

So far that is all of the modifications, though this weekend I may replace convert the MAF to IAT just go have another step towards the turbo build accomplished. Taking the small steps has really paid off considering it takes away the rush to install everything at once or over the course of a couple of weekends or a month. As we all know, those “1 hour projects” have the potential to turn into 3 hours in no time and can really put you behind your expected schedule.

As soon as the beach season is over (and the cooler fall air that turbos love so much moves in) I’ll be installing the more labor intensive mechanical pieces and will limp my way to the dyno for a proper tune. In regards to the system, I will be running the old Greddy manifold that needed the cuts along with a 15g turbo. I also have a FMIC ready to rock and roll as well. Theres also a set of NB injectors to keep me on the safe side of fueling and an electric cut out because I really don’t want to hear the exhaust droning in my ears.

The intention of the build is to have a daily driveable engine that still achieves decent gas mileage while being able to rip through the gears when boost is built. I’ve already blown up one rear end due to auto-x and always have my eyes open for a cheap Torsen, but by limiting my boost to 7-8 lbs, I hope to not have to make any major repairs for a while, except the clutch, which I am leaving alone for now just to watch it fail in a spectacular fashion.

I’m looking forwards to reading more on the site and learning about my build, so glad all of this support is here!

Question: Did you tune on 87 octane? When I get mine, does it make sense to tune on 87, then re-tune for 93? Is there enough difference between the 2 that I will learn something, or is it just a waste of time?

You're not going to like the cutout. It will eventually leak or stop working. There are bunch of people using the huge magnaflow to great success, and remember a turbo is a muffler in its own right.

Thanks for the tip, I'll do some research on the magnaflow muffler. I'd love to increase the size of the exhaust, but hate, hate, hate that bassy, sound at cruise and the dying animal screech under power. Time to watch some youtube videos.

I originally tuned on 87 just for S&G's to see what would happen since I live less than a mile from a gas station. That and there was only 2 gallons in the tank. The engine idled poorly but ran okay. Once I put 93 in the tank the idle smoothed out immensely and the engine ran much more smoothly.

I suppose you could build a tune for either type of fuel, but at the end of the day the difference in cost of filling up on premium or regular is ~$2-3. Not really a deal breaker or enough money to get me to run another tune so I feel its time wasted.
