Talking Just ordered a Shanghai-S for my NB. Ready to Boogie XD

So this is my first post on MiataTurbo, which is fitting because last night I ordered a Shanghai-S kit for my 99. So I'm pretty stoked to finally have a Turbocharged Miata, haha.

Ive had my 99 for about 3 years now, and have yet to d any serious modifications to it, just exhaust, intake, some weight reduction, and appearance mods. oh, and up until very recently I was running 100-shot Direct port nitrous, but thats mostly sold now to fund the turbo XD

Awesome - welcome! I'll be curious to see how your install goes with the Shanghai kit and how you like it once it is up and running.

Yah, I got the very basic kit with the addition of a bypass valve, a wideband bung, and the FMU system.
I was considering using a Vortec FMU with an inline fuel pump, and essentially making a knock-off version of the BEGi fuel system, but in the end I decided I wanted the fully adjustable FMU.
Im hoping I can run 5-6 PSI non-intercooled on 93 octane wthout retarding the ignition. If it cant be done then Ill figure out an intercooler and take it to 8, then maybe even higher with boost-timing retard.

I'm pretty sure you will need some retard at six elbows with or without the intercooler.

Agree - bipes, mds or the like to pull timing. Used ones pop up all the time and are reasonably priced.

Money saved there can go towards braided stainless lines.

my 2 cents

I was under the impression that I could get away with 5-6psi, but maybe Im wrong.
I never had any detonation with a 100 shot of nitrous on the stock timing.

Also, what boost retard units can be used with my 99? I know bipes and the MSD are for 90-97 because they work with the normal optical CAS, while the 99 has that goofy hall sensor.
I dont like the idea of the adjustable crank trigger wheel because then out of boost power suffers dramatically.

And it begins...

I was there, too.

What if I...

Can't I...

Just buy an Adaptronic and you are golden for whatever you want to throw at it.

BTW, love the car, love the seats.

So just to clarify, I absolutly have to retard the stock 99 ignition timing with this kit, non-intercooled, on 93 octane, at 5 psi?

Ah, you are correct.
It appears that it may or may not need the base timing retarded, he basically says to go and drive it on stock timing and listen for knock, and if there is any knock, retard the ignition by 2 degrees.

I guess Ill have to get me an adjustable timing wheel.

After investing the other $$$ you already have, don't cut corners on your engine management just so you can post thrown rod pics later...

BTW - Nice car...
