Hi there,
Noob on this forum just breaking my cherry

I've had my 1989 Miata/MX5 (we got them earlier in Australia) for a little over 10 years now. It was rebuilt ground up as a show car from 1999-2001 but is now relegated to club runs, track days and sprints as my focus has changed somewhat now.

The 1.6 B6 motor puts out a little over 300 rwhp on 20psi.

I've actually been a member for 2 years but never had the time to post till the current career change.

Anyway, I've found it very interesting to see the different set ups used over there in the U.S. compared to us over here in Australia.

Biggest difference I found, is the use of standalone ECUs over here. Most of us make the transition once we go above a mild 6-7psi turbo kit and start wanting more.

MoTec, Autronics, Wolf, Haltech, etc are all Australian built and thus we have the convenience of a local phone call for tech support.

This really helps when you are setting up cold/hot starts, idle up, anti-lag, traction control, tuning, etc.

I have yet to thread on U.S. soil but several of my friends/state club members went on a trip last year to do "Backroads to Bavaria" with Club Miata Northwest.

Pretty sure they know the organiser well.

I'd love to come and visit sometime but the key is convincing the wife that it is not all going to be a trip about cars.

Hmmmm actually she does have an Uncle in Cal....
I wonder if she would notice if I left her at Disneyland with the relatives

Do any of these units come with PnP harnesses or are there Boomslang's available... or do they all require cutting/splicing the factory harnesses.

For simplicity and ease of troubleshooting, I will go to great efforts in the future to avoid cutting any factory wires. Some guys have no problem with it, but I'm not a fan.

The Wolf V500 has plug in kits for the models from 1989-*1994 with a very basic tune to get you to a dyno (to get properly tuned).

*1994 was the changeover year for the ECU plugs so some 1.8s with the earlier ECU plug from the 1.6 will work.

We also use the MoTec and Wolf V500 universal units with Boomslang harnesses wired to MoTec plugs so that the factory wiring is not cut. We did this for a SE or MSM as you call it, back in 2006.

However, majority of modified turbo MX5s here run wired in aftermarket standalone ECUs. I have an Autronic running in mine and its been wired in there for 10 years now!!!

Perhaps the main concern is how easy it would be to return the car to stock if you ever wanted to sell.
