Mega noob Has TSI question
Hi im new to the forum, I have a 91 miata with a greddy kit. So my car has been running perfect since buying it a month ago. I have been looking into getting TSIs but am worried I will go lean with the extra air.
Here is my set up from what I know.
Vortec FMU
Stock injectors
stock afm
intercooler
ngk plug wires/plugs
stock ECU which leads me to believe my timing is at 6 since thats what the greddy kit asks for.
I have a AEM wideband gauge and spot on my exhaust for the O2 but havent but the o2 cuz I dont want to buy the wrong one.
Boosting 5psi
So my question is, if I were to get the TSIs will this allow me to up my timing a bit? Or will it just cause me to run lean?
Once again I am a mega noob please dont hurt my butthole to much lol I have owned a miata for 2 years this is just my first turbo miata.
Oh and if anyone has a link to a good place to but a wideband o2 sensor please post. Looking forward to learning everything I can from this site.

It won't make you run lean. It won't really do anything. They won't give you more power if that is what you are looking for.
If you aren't in Cali (you should put your location in where it shows under your name) I recommend getting a Megasquirt ECU from Braineak (See the stickys under "DIY FAQ"). Then you can turn things up. The FMU is very limited as a tuning bandaid. \
Search the stickied threads and learn all you can. And I recommend reading build threads of others so that you can see what works and what didn't.

The best way to get better spool and more power would be to open the exhaust some and remove any restrictions there by going to a larger diameter pipe.
Moving your air cleaner out of the engine bay and to a cooler spot in front of the radiator or behind the bumper cover somewhere would help you much more than TSI's. TSI's are mostly a cosmetic upgrade, which is why I said in my above post that they will make little difference. Getting your intake pulling cooler air will help but only a fraction of a percentage of what you are making now. It will be like 140whp versus 144whp probably.
Are you using an intercooler? At your pressure levels you don't need one but it could help as much or more than the cold air intake. Both together might even be enough to feel a slight difference at those pressure levels.
Going to a MegaSquirt and being able to accurately and dynamically control timing and fueling according to load and rpms will certainly yield many more horses when in boost and better economy when out of boost.
Braineak on this forum builds the kits and sells them really inexpensively. You can find the info in a sticky on the "Miata parts for sale" part of the forum.
Are you prepared to switch things back and forth for the inspections? If so you aren't limited by much other than keeping it on the down-low.
