New guy from the Hawkeye state
Hey, been lurking for a bit and decided to "de-noob" myself. About a year ago my father and I decided we wanted to invest in a hobby car to drag/autoX/track and of course the answer was Miata. Picked up a '96 base, black with a Flyin Miata 2.5 suspension kit and a Boss Frog roll bar. We've since picked up an MSPNP, and a second motor/trans for an eventual rebuild and exhintake mod.
Have taken the car to the drag strip for an uninspiring best of 16.1 second 1/4 mile, and autoX'd regularly with the local SCCA. Plan is to learn MS, add some FiveO EV14 injectors, and either an FMII or fab our own from JGS parts. The 2554 on E85 should exceed our needs, we would like to keep the driveline reliable. Would like to learn to weld, but life's short, can't take your money with you, and cars are for driving.

Welcome, I grew up in CR, lived there for 15+ years. Unfortunately I live in poopy Ohio now. It's like Iowa but worse. The only good thing is all of the amazing race tracks nearby.
Which organization did you drive Iowa Speedway with? I did my first ever track day there in April of 2007 with NASA, not long after it opened. As far as I know NASA hasn't been back since...
I would recommend piecing together your own turbo kit instead of buying an FM. I used a JGS DIY manifold and it worked very well for a log manifold.

SCCA had an AutoX in the Iowa Speedway infield. That picture was taken as a bit of a novelty as you only had to go on the oval to enter the staging/pit area.
Do you have a pic of your completed manifold? I'm trying to determine if I can forward bias the turbo flange on a log manifold. I would like to run it as far forward as I can. Thinking this would create an unequal pulse at the turbo, which while not ideal, is what Subaru does. Would allow for a smoother downpipe bend.
As for Hawkeye vs. Cyclone, I genuinely don't have a horse in that race. Actually a Mt. Mercy "Mustangs" undergrad, and working towards MBA there as well.. Had I called it the Mustang State people would have thought I was from a land of 5.0 liters, mullets and cousin love. . .

I do have some pictures of the completed manifold on my home computer. I can post them tonight, I thought I already had them up somewhere on this website but I guess I don't.
I did exactly as you say, mounted the flange more forward, basically between #1 and #2 cylinders. I'm sure a fluids dynamics engineer and simulation software could show how awful the set-up was but my car made ~230whp at ~14psi with a t3s60 and it spooled just fine. Also did over 1000 track miles like that (well usually turned boost down to 6-9psi) and it did just fine. Having the turbo mount more forward made the downpipe fab much easier, I still wasn't able to make a full 3" downpipe though, it was 2.5" transitioning to 3". I did not have power steering or AC though, I think that mostly affects intercooler piping routing though.

Between #1 and 2 is exactly where I would be targeting, after I remove AC and depower the PS rack. Good to know you ran that with success, I really need to spend the time sifting through manifold pictures to get a better idea what others have done. What I'm proposing might be common practice for all I know. Would also like utilize this (or something similar) if there's room:

Seems like a good/easy way to achieve a divorced wg. Would dramatically simplify the exhaust section too.

Good 'ole Dike-New Hartford, I used to go to football camp with some guys from there.
My step-dad is an engineer at Rockwell. Actually, one of my wifes best friends is the daughter of the CEO... I used to go over to Clay's house back in high school and watch football games with him. His daughter used to say they weren't "rich". HA! (Though at the time they lived in a very modest house).
I can get you some pics of my manifold. I sold my miata almost two years ago but I still have most of the turbo stuff sitting in my garage waiting for me to buy another one...

Don't think I need pics of that manifold, seems everyone mounted the flange forward on the JGS manifold (including JGS). Still doesn't seem to be the most efficient, but no log manifold will be so, eh. . Plus it should allow for a more efficient downpipe, and is the right price point.
