Default NB in the NC

Greetings miataturbo.net peoples,

Meet Barry, the 1999 NB1.


I bought Barry back in March 2016, with hopes of filling a void left from a Subaru STi I decided to let go. This car has been a blast to drive and work on for the past 10 months. I do not regret this decision yet.....(depends on how deep I go down the racing rabbit hole).

My plans for this car is to have a reliable street/autox/track pig. I have begun working on this preparation by adding an 01 header, BF engine mounts, BF GT3 roll bar, and Ohlins DFV. Next on my list is to get new wheels/tires as two of the stockers are warped and I do not feel comfortable putting them through a track day. I was able to get in 1 autox day late last year and had an absolute blast. I am still undecided whether to stay N/A or go boosted, hence why I'am here.

Look forward to learning from the other racers/enthusiasts in the forum. I'll be spending most of my time in the Race Prep area.

Welcome, i am not far in High Point.

Some advice for ecu.

Most counties in NC require OBD plug in inspections. They will cause you difficulties with an aftermarket ecu. Some have managed to set it up so that they can plug in the stock ecu briefly get the inspection done however it can be a bit of a pain.

Megasquirt is absolutely the way to go and should work very well for you. DIYPNP is probably the best all around.

I know all too well the struggles of NC emissions... I may end up registering it back at my mothers house to avoid this and to give me some mod room. I have been looking into the DIYPNP alot, being as I'm an electrical engineer I know I can handle the assembly. I am not a total noob to tuning, I did dabble in my STi tune, but I am new to TunerStudio. My only concern is having to build multiple circuits in order to get everything to work smoothly together, ie alternator, maybe A/C, etc. I still have a lot of research to do on it though.

Do you have a DIYPNP installed?

I had a diypnp at first and have fixed a couple. Now i am running an ms3x in preperation for my VVT swap. I am not an expert like some others are but i am able to help if you need it.

Skip the DIYPNP and go straight to a MS3X. If you are an EE you should have no trouble building it. Here is a good site to check out for build docks and such. It is still under construction, but should give you a good idea of what you need to do.

If you are staying naturally aspirated for a good while, then emissions should not be to much of an issue. Mostly just swapping in the MAF and swapping back to stock ecu.
