Default Questions about mazdaspeed miata

Hello to all,
I just recently acquired a 1991 miata from a deceased uncle. Well the car needs some work such a throw out barring, a manual window regulator, and some body work. Despite all of this problems I have decided to sell my prize possession. A stock 2006 corvette zo6. Anyhow, I have some friends that have miata's as well, so..... I plan on buying a mazdaspeed miata pending the selling of my car zo6. I am going to have two miatas!!! lol! To say the least, I am going to need some mods to make the miata fast. I have a list of queston to my new fellow miata community to help my understanding on what I am getting myself into.
All questions are about 2004 to 2005 miata mazdaspeed.
1. How much whp is the car's stock engine good for?
2. Is a AEM FIC safe for tuning up to 350whp.
3. Will the bottom end of the 1.8 na motor bolt up the the head of the mazdaspeed?
4. How much whp is the transmission good for?
5. How much whp is the rear end good for?
These are some starter questions.
Thanks Steven

At least those are all high round numbers. LOL
So I guess a AEM stand alone is the only way to go Huh?

1. How much whp is the car's stock engine good for?
All of it.*

2. Is a AEM FIC safe for tuning up to 350whp.
An AEM FIC isn't even safe for tuning to 100whp.

3. Will the bottom end of the 1.8 na motor bolt up the the head of the mazdaspeed?
Yup. All 1.8 Miata heads are interchangeable. For what it's worth, the Mazdaspeed head is really no different from the one used in the '99-'00 cars.

4. How much whp is the transmission good for?
The 5-speed is good for slightly more power than the stock connecting rods. The 6-speed is good for slightly more power than the 5-speed.

5. How much whp is the rear end good for?
Slightly more than the 6-speed transmission.

I know some of these answers are a tad vague. There just isn't a single magical torque figure at which the transmission flies apart. I've heard of some folks putting > 300 HP through them without a single problem. Other folks have gone through two or three gearboxes and are in the upper-middle 200 HP region.

Mechanical empathy probably plays a big role. For instance, drag tires and a grabby clutch will smash the gearbox into smithereens just as easily as 400 HP will.

* = somewhere in the lower-middle 200HP region, but again, this is only a sort of median answer. Some folks have pretezled their con rods without ever seeing 200 HP, others are doing far more.

Its a good ecu, not the ONLY one, but its good.
Do a bit of searching and you'll find real answers to the power questions

You right about that, I should do a bit of searching. I was just hoping to be spoon fed. I don't have a lot of experience with modding or tuning. I just bought to corvette because it was fast from the factory. But after driving the miata... The funnest thing I've ever drove. I just want to have the near passing power of the vette. What I wanted to do is buy this mazdaspeed miata. Then I want to buy the tuning ecu, bigger turbo, fmic, injectors, fuel rail, fuel pump, clutch, and other accessories and supporting mods that I forgot, so that once I push the block to its limit, I can have already built another 1.8l bottom end to bolt up to the head of the car. That was a terrible run on sentence. LOL! Any other advice would be greatly appreciated.

My car pulls away from a c6 corvette. I'm at only 307
hp/lb ratio aint no joke.

Also there is no reason to get an MSM if you're going to be swapping out damn near everything on it anyway.

Well I figured MSM came with the better 6spd manual transmission, lsd, and a few other small things that made it a little better for the mean time while awaiting a built bottom end. My zo6 is a little faster than a base c6. But I get your point your miata is fast. I have seen the msm go for under 10 grand. I didnt think it was a huge difference in price between the other miatas.

I like the honesty and the plan. If you've got the money for a ZO6, I wouldn't **** around... your time is probably what counts here. Go to Flyin Miata and buy their FULL FM UPGRADE with the 3071 for the Mazdaspeed. Get their 3" exhaust, Level2 Clutch, M-Tuned Coolant Reroute and Crossflow Radiator, and Oil Cooler. When you order the turbo kit, be sure to upgrade to larger injectors, hard oil/water lines, larger intercooler, stage8 locking hardware, and ceramic coating.

Have a shop near you install and tune... tell them to aim for 275whp. It's just a matter of turning up the boost with that turbo. It'll boost a bit late, but the big exhaust will help... it's temporary anyways.

When you've had enough fun at that power or hurt the motor, call FM and have them build you a 2.0stroker w/fully built head. Have that motor out and installed by the same shop that did your first one... have them tune for about 350-375whp and have fun.

Total will be in the $20k range depending on how crazy you go with the motor and what your shop charges you for labor/tuning... but you would do zero work and it would take minimal time.

You'll probabl be OK sticking with the stock suspension and wheels... but definitely grab some sticky rubber. Brake and chassis upgrades at your discretion. A rollbar and harnesses go without saying. Grab a 3.636 gearset and have it treated before you throw in the big motor to help make 1st gear useable again.

Enjoy.

You don't need a stroker. Not necessary unless you poop money.

300hp will not be faster than a c6 z06. 400hp -might be-. I have yet to find out.

If you get injectors get 1000cc or bigger.

Yes just get FMs spiffy new package. Also don't get their exhaust. Have ARTech make you a 3.5" exhaust.

Also don't get a gt3071. Get a GTX3076. 500hp capable under 25psi.

Yes get a 3.636.

Yes get upgraded valve springs. over 300hp+3.636+6speed=decent gearing

Even though you're upgrading everytiungn I would still start with a MSM because they look good and have the strongest factory tranny and diff. Rip out the engine, turbo, IC and sell it as a package to some fool on ebay for 2000 bucks.
