Default That guy from Pardeeville Wisconsin

Hey everyone.

My names Devin, Im a 24 year old farmer from the heart of wisconsin. I farm dairy so Ive probably felt more **** than most of you have ever dreamed of.

Ive been hooked on cars since I was 12, I built alot of different things over the years, everything from a ratrod 67 C10 pickup all the way to a 750cc kawasaki powered lawn mower.

I got hooked on the imports when I bought my 1st honda, a 88 crx it was already modded and looking back it was kind of stupid, but loads of fun. Then I became a die hard crx guy and owned about 12. Then rear wheel drive got back in my blood and i built 3 V8 swapped s10s, I still needed to satisfy the urge for handling performance though.....enter mazda miata.

Id recently bought a house and my whole life my dailys have been $500 beaters, I thought the purchase of my house warranted me buying a respectable vehicle and I would therefore be an adult. I purchased a 2001 ford ranger and drove that for a week before it caught on fire and insurance paid out. That was the moment I said **** it I'm done being an adult. I then purchased my white 93 with 140k on it in fairly good shape.

Im in the process of turbocharging it unless a 1.6 supercharger falls in my lap. I built a megasquirt and installed a hard dog roll bar and im slowly accumulating everything to force feed this baby. I have no power goals, the only 2 things i know is i want boost and Im going to run water meth.

^^^^ thats my story and ill see you guys in the forums

You care to elaborate Monk? Just curious as to why you think that? Most the research says its worth it, and i mean it cant hurt right?

It depends on your goals. At the power levels you could possibly reach in a 1.6 before you start breaking everything in your drivetrain, it just simply isn't necessary, and it certainly won't be cost effective. Save the money and buy some good tires.
Set a goal pertaining to the power you hope to achieve, and then we can talk more about what steps you need to take to reach that goal.

I've no goals. Go until something breaks. One up then break the next thing. I have a second motor laying here I plan on building up. I'm hunting for a TII tranny and Ive got a Lincoln mark rear end sitting here from a old project. I'm thinking ahead lol. I see where your coming from though I guess.

Well, as a guy who has also built V8 mini- trucks, I would guess you have some sort of fabrication skills.
Here's the deal though, there are many ways to go about this, some easier/ cheaper than others.
At ~220 WHP, you are going to bend rods. At ~250, you are going to destroy your five speed.
Your clutch and diff will go well before either of these.
A common generic upgrade path for 1.6 cars goes something like this:
1. Swap to 1.8
2. Upgrade diff (1.8 units are much more robust and handle power well)
3. Upgrade clutch (sky is the limit here, there are tons of options)
4. Engine management (most people on this forum use megasquirt)
5. Upgrade rods
6. Turbo (everyone does this slightly differently, there are lots of right answers)

Im already on the megasquirt boat lol you ain't gotta convince me there.

My spare is a 1.6 and I'd like to stick with a 1.6 cause it seems everyone dumps em. The game plan for the other motor is

Rods
Pistons
Billet oil pump
Cam/valve work (maybe)

Grenade and repeat lol

Parts are a little hard to come by in my neck of the woods. Either I have to travel far or ship it. Maybe when I get sick of the 1.6 thing I'll go the fe3 route. Being different is always a good thing.

That will be a recipe for a reliable 1.6. I can see you've been doing your homework. You'll be fine.

I also disagree with Monk about the 5-speed being 250whp limited. They really aren't limited quite that low unless you are slamming gears or doing burnouts.

With any 1.6 car the rear end is a failure point, even at stock power. The 1.8 rear ends are good for towards 350whp and it should be an easy swap.

Welcome to the forum!
