Default My story

Hello fellow Miata drivers!!! So my name is Brandon and I drive a 92 M Edition (her name is Ella) that I inherited from my grandmother (her middle name was Ella). The car was bought for me and her to travel in when I was young (about 8) and that's what we did. In 2008 she passed away from breast cancer and left the car to me. Unfortunately it took a few years for me to get the car due to some issues with the family.

I wasn't really into cars much until I received this car. Ever since, I have dedicated most of my time to learning about them. I have had the car for about a year now and so far I have added OBX-R headers, a resonated test tube in place of the cat, and a mangflow muffler. Took out the A/C as well since the compressor locked up. I heard Miatas were perfect for beginner drifters so I had a few of my 240 friends show me some tricks. I'm no good at it but I'm still Learning.

Aaaaaaaany ways! My original plan was to supercharge her but I happen to come across a chirbo kit online for real cheap and I pretty much said screw it, you gotta start somewhere and decided to go turbo. I have a 1.6 from a 93 Miata on a stand at work that I'm going to work on until it's worthy to go in my engine bay. So far I have Stage 2 OBX-R cams, T28 turbo, manifold, down pipe, mid pipe, and an RX7 MAF.

Sorry for such a long post btw lol

welcome! your car has some sentimental value i take it. probably not a great idea to drift it... also who makes the manifold you picked up?

there is a ridiculous amount of information on this site save yourself a lot of headaches and money and research diligently. It will also help you understand the personalities on this forum and that in itself is valuable in a few ways.

The kit a bought included a manifold, down pipe, mid pipe, and a T28 hybrid turbo with an internal waste gate. I bought it from Maxredline.com. I know it's a cheap but like I said, you gotta start somewhere.

Rest in peace poor miata. You are doomed.

-Edit
By the way if this is the manifold your "chirbo kit" came with, good luck keeping it in 1 piece for longer than 2 days:

Is it against the rules to have friends with 240s? I bought the kit without anyone knowing. I wasn't told to buy it. I also didn't ask you to judge my parts. Seeing as tho this forum is for people that need help and have questions. I don't think I asked "what do guys think of my cheap *** turbo kit" I know it's cheap and sketchy. I took my chances when I clicked the "purchase" button. I joined because I will probably need some help when I'm ready to get a programmer or a stand alone.

That manifold is proven to be a terrible design that will destroy itself and may damage your car, Brandon.

We may sound like ******** here, but if you had researched that particular turbo kit on here, you would have realized why we are being ********. That kit is absolutely ******* terrible.

What about the rest of it? I hear Garret can replace the internals of the turbo with their own. Is that worth doing? As fare as the manifold goes, what should I look into?

Firstly welcome to the forum.

Secondly the miata is a horrible drift car, and we look down on 99% of the people who say they want to drift it. There are a few who are doing it, who we don't give **** to. That is because they have shown they actually know what they are doing when building a car, and drift at a national level.

No Garret will not replace the internals of that Turbo. Honestly the only part of that kit you bought that might be somewhat decent is the turbo. Everything else is junk and will break rather quickly.

You should spend the next 6 months reading every stickied thread on this site and every build thread. Only after that should you start considering boosting your car. Your knowledge of what is needed is extremely lacking and you will end up breaking your kit, most likely blowing your motor, and costing your self a ton more money then just doing it correctly the first time after you have the knowledge.

If Garrett replaces the internals of a churbo with their own (And Garrett themselves won't do it, you'll find an aftermarket rebuilder for this), it ends up being half the price of just getting a new garrett. If you must save money, dig up a SR20 T25. I'm running a churbo, and seriously am regretting going down from my SR20 T25 personally. The only way a Churbo is worth it is if you can just buy it and leave it the fark alone, as soon as you have to put labor in it, the deal goes sour quickly. I would check out Brainy's T3 as a good churbo if you must go churbo.

As for the manifold, get a BEGi cast, FM cast, or talk to Artech or TurboTim for theirs. The last I checked a basic Artech manifold was actually cheaper than BEGi or FM, I truly wish I had the time to get an Artech manifold over my BEGi when I was installing my latest turbo, let me tell you! You can also find used BEGi or FM manifolds in the classifieds here - and for not much more than they want up front for that manifold too!

The rest of it, well, it's not worth the money. For what you'll have into that Churbo kit, I could have a SR20 T25 with a used BEGi/FM cast manifold and DP - quality gear that will last you forever.

I don't want to say I'm a drifter. I have participated in one even to safely practice and I sucked at it. I don't do it on the street because there is too much stuff to hit. Haven't drifted since I had to buy tires lol
