Default "New" guy from Florida (ISC racing mechanic)

Hello, my name is Drake and I live in Florida. I put "new" in quotations in my title because I am new to this forum but not to miatas. I work at ISC Racing here in Winter Haven. I have worked here off and on for the past 2 years, basically I come help Mike out when he needs a car tuned or when he's going to the track with more cars then he can handle by himself. I have worked on more miatas then I can count and I'm only 20.

A little background on myself. I rebuilt my first engine when I was 7, fast forward to 15 when I built my first race engine. Since then I have been building engines for power and reliability. The most power I have built for a car was my 93 FD rx7. I got 550whp out of a stock 13b with just bolt ons and race gas. I then sold the FD and bought my second Subaru wrx. I built that engine to 320awhp, but it just isnt enough fun to drive. So I am now building a stock engine to put back in it and sell that car. My built heads will go on my other wrx, which has a 2.5 block, and shoot for 400awhp. Once that is done I will sell that car. This is where my miata comes in. I have 2 miatas sitting at Mikes right now, one being my race car, one being a 1600 that I got for $300.

Plans for the car:
1.8 swap
10:1 Forged Pistons
Forged rods
Garrett gt25 (plan on running around 10psi)
Supporting modifications

Looking to get 310-350 to the wheels. I miss the feeling of driving a car that I feel like I'm going to die everytime I get near the throttle like my FD was, so thas why I want to build this miata. 320whp in a 1800lb car should pretty much make me feel that way. Well anyways, thanks for reading and I look forward to becoming a part of the turbo Miata community!

Welcome to the forum! I've been to Mike's quite a few times and tried to help with a couple of MegaSquirt issues a few times, too.

Are you planning on using race gas in your turbo car? If not, a compression ratio of 10 to 1 will hold you back quite a bit in your pursuit of 300+ whp because you can't run optimal timing without detonation.

A gt25 will get you ~190whp at 10psi.

Maybe I'll see you at the track someday soon.

When you get a chance, pick Mike's brain on what breaks inside the RX8 6-speeds when you push them hard. We've got a discussion going in another thread about it.

^^ yes I plan on race gas, I'm still up in the air though if I should bump the compression up or stick the the 9:0.1 and bump the boost up. One of my issues is having torque down low, so the turbo lag feel is minimized. But I'm up for suggestions.

And yes, we have had a lot of people there helping with megasquirt issues. I think we finally have it all figured out though

#1 if this is a track car why do you care about off-boost performance? Find what compression you need to reach MBT on your fuel of choice and use that.

#2 no E85 available?

#3 you want EFR instead of that old Garrett turbo.

Welcome.

I will drive this car from time to time on the street as well. Being that we have no emissions laws or anything of that nature here I won't have to worry about it.

No e85 locally, sadly.

I will look into that turbo. I was also thinking about turbonetics, I had one on my Wrx and liked the results. I know this turbo still isnt on the same league as the EFR, but they still work well.

EDIT: I am also thinking about lowering my power goals and making this a fun daily. Maybe shoot for something in the 250whp range.

Turbonetics, like Precision, seems to be really popular in the Big ****** Turbo world, but their small frame turbos are not as loved. At least around here.

The T2 framed EFRs are pretty much the top dog today on Miatas, spool like a GT2560, power like a GT2871. A member mentioned on miata.net that he is at 5psi by the time the pedal reaches the floor at 1000rpm.

They're expensive, but when you factor in a good EWG + BOV they are competitive price wise with the GT series, which is a steal.
