I just realized I've never made a noob intro post.
I suppose it is about time, as I've ordered a Shanghai starter kit from BEGi.
I have a 00' base model w/5 speed that has been my daily driver since 2005. Before that, my daily driver since 1999 had been a 93' base model.
I've wanted to turbocharge a Miata for 10 years now, but always found something else to spend the money on.
The only mods done to my 00' are FM springs, KYB shocks, and a butterfly brace/framerails.
My goal is to be at around 150-160 rwhp. I want to shut the hood and only have to open it to check fluids and change the oil. I haven't checked compression yet, but it only has 63,000 miles on the odometer so it's probably decent.
I'm thinking Shanghai turbo, eBay intercooler, not sure about engine management yet--Maybe zoom3, stock injectors, stock exhaust, stock clutch.

Did they ever release the Zoom3? It was coming out "next week" for at least four or five months when I wanted one. Ended up going Adaptronic.
If you want 150-160WHP, you could get by without the IC on a 2000. You will only be looking at needing 5-6 psi with your CR. Could make for a cheap, clean install. You can always add IC later.

I started off much the same way you are looking to go. My original setup was a BEGi S-series on a 99 automatic miata. No IC but did add the FMU stuff to get a little more power.
Originally with the S series I was happy with the gains; but quickly saw that without something good to control spark that I was doomed. Added an IC to cool things down and then 315cc injectors with an AEM UEGO for monitoring the AFRs. Quickly converted to E85 and was running 11PSI with out any help from an ECU... just an O2 clamp, FMU, E85, and that was it.
Car got wrecked right after I put on a MSM 6Speed trans; but now am rolling with the same kit with Adaptronic, Ceramic Coating, 600cc injectors, and upgraded lines and whatnot.
Anyhow, what I am driving at here is that your kit will be modular as hell and you can do a bunch with it. Take your time doing the install, check every damn part in the box and mock up all items before you pull your car apart since there is always a chance that something could be missing from your kit.

I was hoping to avoid the extra cost of a wideband and the tuning, tuning, and tuning, but there really is nothing in between an FMU and a standalone in the Miata world unfortunately for 99+ Miatas, cost wise.

It's still coming out next week--or month or two or so. I'm starting to have second thoughts about my original plan. I think I should prep up for megasquirt.
