Default 1.6 project in bumble[rules, bro] Iowa

Hi guys,

My name is Rob, and I've got a classic red '93 that I picked up in August that will hopefully be getting a turbo in the not so distant future. It is in fairly decent shape. Body is good, the paint is better than most for its age but still kind of rough. There are a couple pea size spots bubbling up on the rockers that will have to be addressed, but hopefully it's not a complete **** show when I get in there to fix it. Interior is decent as well, with no real cracks or fading. Has a hard top(no headliner or defrost) and a set of 15x7.5 C1s.

With 174,000mi on the clock the mileage is pretty high, but it's not too bad mechanically.

Until now I've mostly been a motorcycle guy(sportbikes and supermoto), but since moving to Iowa I get depressed when I ride. The roads are crap, and the nearest worthwhile track, Brainerd, is 6hrs away. Not having any good roads or a close track is killing me with the bike. I've got an 05 ZX-10R that will most likely be going up for sale in the spring. I can always buy another one if I move to a less shitty part of the country.

A list of things I have done to the car since buying it;
Oil change
Differential, transmission, and shift turret fluid changes
Rebuilt shift turret
Ralco short shifter. I'm sure no where in the same galaxy as a MiataRoadster STS, but actually bretty gud.
FM VMaxx classics set at a sensible and handling oriented ride height.
new Sport Comp2s
New valve cover gasket and CAS oring.
Spark plugs
949 front sway bar end links
Put just short 3000 miles on it between late August and November when I parked it at the first snow.
Repainted finish panel and mirrors

Stuff I have sitting in the closet waiting to go on the car when the weather warms up;
Energy Suspension poly bushing full set.
Ball joint/tie rod end link boots
DIY coolant reroute using BEGi rear housing
NAPA blank brake rotors
Brake pads
949 braided brake lines
949 clutch line/master/slave kit
Clutch fork dust boot
Rear main seal
transmission seals

Turbo plans;
200hp is the goal. I really don't need any more(yeah yeah, I know. I say that NOW... BUT)

The manifold and exhaust are still up in the air. I don't have a welder, but I would like to buy or borrow one so I can fabricate my own.
The turbo is a T3 China charger. The one Braineack runs/ran, not the T3/T4 hybrid.
Probably an eBay special intercooler and piping that I'll hopefully be welding and not using a million couplers.
MSPNP2 or DIYPNP, that's still up in the air, but I won't be skimping on management. I will definitely be ditching the AFM.

Supporting the turbo will be a Torsen and a FM Happy Meal, though I'm still kind of holding out hope for the 949 Sport Clutch to be released before I buy a clutch.

That's my story. Let the hate begin.

P.S. Yes, I know most everyone around here says just to swap the 1.8, but I don't care.

Thanks guys, but it seems I fucked up. I understand now from reading the ultimate first post sticky I was supposed to spell poorly and ask to be spoon fed everything. I was then supposed to come back a week hence after reading up.

Seems I got the order of events wrong.

Where in Iowa? My car and I tried to kill each other back in September; and now I have a good compression BP5A 1.8 motor with a squaretop, cam, and other goodies just sitting around if it could help you.

Good looking car.

^talk to that man and give him money.

Seriously though, no need to swap out the 1.6 for your goals and if it's healthy. You know what you're gaining and what you're giving up. Just don't go buy a brand new FM2 kit or something, that'd be dumb.

You're obviously not that dumb.

These are a few of his favorite things.

Sioux County(about 50mi from Sioux Falls). We'll see if my little old 1.6 can take the boost. If it can't, and you still have the motor, maybe we'll talk.

Thanks

But getting the 1.8 first means no new manifold. That alone is a 200-9000$ savings.

Assuming I don't just get a tacotaco for the 1.6 and fabricate my own thereafter. Yes, it would be a savings of OVER 9000

Still 200 dollars. And no taco taco for a 1.8. I just built a manifold for my 1.6 and I already regret not getting a 1.8. Check out my build thread.

A 1.8 costs more than $200. If I never swap, I would be saving money. The point is it doesn't really matter.

I know there's no 1.8 tacotaco manifold, that's why I said 1.6

You got no problem Rob. You've obviously already read the threads and made your own decision. If you're not even sure you'll ever go 1.8 just don't spend a lot of money on stuff that wouldn't transfer and you're good to go IMO, which is basically the manifold.

Aidan, on the other hand, swapped out his 1.6.... for another 1.6

Exactly. I plan to build or go with a tacotaco 1.6 manifold, and everything else, turbo, exhaust, coolant reroute, clutch/flywheel, IC, etc. all of that will swap to the 1.8 should I ever do it.
