He gives exactly zero information as to how he has done anything. No mention of a cam sensor without which you absolutely can't run an ignition system.

He did mention he had a cam sensor I think on the first page...?

yeah, he did, but it didn't exactly sound like he had spark running yet.

I didn't read up on the MS2 too much when I was doing my research because it didn't seem to have much extra to offer over ms'n'se, that I could actually use.

What are its advantages for Miatas?

I would say better resolution... you can use bigger injector and keep the idle nice... And the AE seem nicer on MS2.

You might have to go over to msefi.com to see exactly what's better.

Plus the MS2 has more inputs/outputs and CAN support - which effectively gives unlimited options.

I was thinking of Megasquirting my 91 with basic Greddy kit.
I still need to do a lot of reading, but I was wondering what exactly prevents using MS2 v3.0 on Miatas? And has these issues been figured out.

https://www.miataturbo.net/forums/showthread.php?t=4448

I'd like to use stock sensors and ignition, but also would like higher resolution of charts.

Back to reading...
Thank you in advance if someone could help me choosing the best alternative.

MS2 doesn't support the 2nd wheel decoder and MSnSE does.

MSnSE doesn't yet run on MS2.

So we have to use MS1.

Unless of course we are happy to run our setups as fuel only.

Or unless we can somehow figure out a way to get spark happening without using the CAS.

The MS2 Extra forums shows that there is a alpha release available.

Still very early. Alpha releases are barely usable on the developer's car. Patience is a virtue...

I'm running MS2 fuel only, Turbo, I'm using the stock CAS for tach. signal; but soon I'll run spark using Ford EDIS-4, it's an easy mod @ around $100 (or a lot less if going to the junkyard), only 2 wires connecting to MS2 (http://www.megamanual.com/ms2/EDIS.htm)

On development are the Router Board (http://www.megasquirt.info/router/) by MS2 designers, and the Expansion Board (http://www.megasquirt.info/msexp/) by an independant designer.
The first one will allow, using CAN, sequential injection, COP, etc. The second one will run MS-II and MSnS-E at the same time.

That's all great for the future, but for those of us who have been running the MS on miata's for the last 12 months or so, the only workable option was/is MSnSE and a MSI with the factory ignition.

I don't know much about the MS aside from a bit of reading here but can't it be run using an aftermarket crank trigger wheel like the TECII/III? Additional programming might be required but it would seem to be the easiest way and is already available through TEC dealers.

My view is that the less you change, the less likely you are to stuff something up. If you are just changing the ECU itself then if something breaks it is easier to diagnose (or revert back to stock for testing). I'd rather go with MSnS-extra and use mostly stock stuff than re-invent the wheel on MS2. MS2-extra is going to be an interesting project to watch!

Cheers

With EDIS, you'll replace the stock ignition module with EDIS-4, and use the stock coils pack, stock wiring, do an aditional 2-wire wiring from the EDIS to the VR sensor, attach the tooth ring to the crank pulley and you'll have a permanent 10 deg advance. If you plug the Edis to an ECU(MS2) you'll control the advance at your will.
With a VR/ring combo you won't have variations in readings. With CAS you may have variations due to change in timing belt length.

uhh... the ignition module can't be "replaced" it's assembled with the coils. You'd have to replace your coil pack with something else entirely. I'm personally planning to stick with MS1 MSnSE, anything that says ford on it is staying the hell away from MY car after my experiences with 3 previous ford vehicles.

Was it the electronics on the Ford that let you down... probably not. There is a lot of crappy stuff from Ford, but the electronics usually work fairly well.

It's worth pointing out the the upcoming beta version 2.8 (for MSII) is going to have wasted spark for a 4 cyl.
http://www.msefi.com/viewtopic.php?t...=asc&start=200
(See 9th post from the top)

I get the impression that it should be out any day.

I have an alternate method for splitting the spark pulse with a D flip-flop (dividing the frequency by 2) and ANDing that with the ign pulse. It works in the garage on my O-scope but I'm too much of a coward to run the signal to coils/ignitors on my 99. I'm going to pick up a set of coils from a 1.6 soon. Hopfully by then I'll have the option of going with my method or going with v2.8.
