Leave the stock ECU for idle if nothing else. I haven't heard of anyone getting MS to control idle as well as the stock setup. Like most things, it sounds as simple as solder this and wire this. Save the extra work for things the stock ECU can't do, like WI and boost control.

Mine idles great. Steady, reliable 825rpm when warm.

My car idles just fine too. I guess you're not hearing what pioneers like Al and myself have been saying for ages....

Do you think we should also leave the fuel and spark to the stock ECU???

Some of you guys just don't get it at all. Getting the idle to work with the Megasquirt is FUN, hell just playing with anything on Megasquirt is FUN.

There are a few to many 'customers' around here and not enough DIYers.......

I'm currently guilty of being a prospective while i read my bloody head off.
That's also why i want to build my own, there is far to much to be learned in the board assembly to have someone else throw it together.

Not quite. No doubt you guys have been doing great stuff. Your info was basis for the majority of my install. Unfortunately, I hear way too many guys getting into MS nuts-deep and bailing, spreading bad juju.

My position is that for the majority of folks, it is less frustrating to start simple and work up. I was fuel for 2 weeks, then spark, then turbo'd. The progression made it really easy to spot errors. The original poster isn't sure if he needs his AFM or not, so I'm not sure if he needs to be concerned about getting every last bit of functionality out of the MS first run.

To reclaim my DIY status, I'll start up boost control on my $600 junkyard turbo kit using a $5 JY solenoid.

You're definitely right about starting simple and slowly adding features, we've been saying that also. I just took a little offense to the idle comment.

I personally never even had to read the megamanual. The DIYautotune.com kit comes with all the parts in seperate bags with the locations they need to be soldered. That takes the longest. Then you just need to look through the stickys and perform the miata specific mods. Thats my 2cents.

I broke my own rule of using absolute terms. I should have said "few have gotten it to work well."

Doing that is leaving yourself *wide* oopen for a fall if anything goes wrong though. Sure you threw everyhting together and it worked, but you don't really know the thing well enough for when something goes wrong

my 2 pence

A few facts. There are people who are willing to "hack around" because they like the challenge (I'm one of those). There are people who do it 'cause its cheaper. And there are people who prefer to have stuff done for them - either because they don't find it exciting or because they don't know how/don't trust their abilities/aren't willing to learn.

MS is for the first variety of people. EM/EMU is for the second. All the other ECUs are for the rest. I didnt buy my MS because it's cheap, because it ain't cheap once you add everything up (at least not here in Europe). I bought it because it's open (open architecture, open source), there isn't a vendor lock-in and there's a great community - plus all the great features.

Dude, I'm 6'4, I don't fit under the dash either and I've got no garage to do the wiring in. That's why I bought an extension harness from Boomslang (www.boomslang.us) and made all the required splices and cuts on that extension harness in the comfort of my room. Check the pics.

That is sweet and super clean but i dont trust myself to do **** as finicky as that. Even if i have it out of the car. Small components suck, if i had it my way i would wire everything analog, and direct but that would also be time consuming.
