wtf are you talking about man? Did your old laptop just ahve a serial port?

This is what alot of us are using to connect to various laptops:

USB to Serial Adapter - Works with MegaTune! DIYAutoTune.com

Might just be the driver if you already have that, which can be found here:
MegaSquirt Software and Firmware - MegaTune - MSnS-E

download the
"USB-2920 Drivers for Windows Vista & Vista x64, Windows XP & XP x64, Windows 2003"

I am guessing you just went out and bought a generic USB-serial adapter. The MS is very finnicky about what it will talk to and what it won't. (Must be why we like it.) Get the one from DIYAutotune (it's available from Frys as well).

Also, make sure to install the drivers for the serial to usb converter. Then look what port its plugged into and correspond that with the ms software.

I decided to use a LM technologies LM058 bluetooth adapter. Works perfect and payed about $40 for it on ebay.

LM Technologies Bluetooth RS-232 Adaptor (Serial, 100m), #LM058-SINGLE - eXpansys Inc

A bit more expensive than usb, but there's no wires which makes it well worth it for me.

Simply set baud rate, plug into MS and pair with laptop. Oh, you do need to short pins 7 and 8 on the DB9 for handshaking though.

On my old laptop I didn't have to use the usb. It connects directly to the back and works right away. When i order the pnp from diy I also got the usb serial converter too. When I pluged this in - Bling - new hardware found. I click install and pops out a window saying it can not be install. checked the com port it says 3 is open. back to megatune test 3 - no signal. I tried this for almost two hrs yesterday...
