Default Need idiots guide to installing MS in a '99

I've searched and I can't find a thread that walks through the hardware portion of installing MS in a '99. My Reverant built MS is sitting at home and I'd like to put it to work. My car is normally aspriated for now. It seems pretty straight forward, but I have a few questions:

1) where do I bring the MAP hose, Wideband wires, and IAT wires into the cabin from under the hood?

2) where/how do I mount the MS? The OEM ecu is right above the clutch pedal and is mounted to a bracket that attaches to the firewall and at some point above the ecu that I can't see, but I know there's a bolt up there somewhere.

3) As it's a '99, I have to deal with emissions and OBDII testing. I have the Innovative MTX-L Wideband, which I think has the ability to report back to the stock ECU as a narrowband. I'd like to have this setup so that when I have to deal with emissions testing, all I have to do is swap the oem ecu in for the MS. This can be done right?

4) Just to make sure, as for the wideband install: I just swap out the o2 sensor and route the wires into the car and make the appropriate connection to the MS and ground the wires to the same spot the ecu is grounded right?

It seems like the hardest part of the hardware install should be swapping the O2 sensore and figuring out how to mount the MS above the pedals somewhere... any tips or a thread cite would be fantastic.

Thanks

1) Drill a big hole in the floor board on the passenger side at the trans tunnel, it makes life easier.
2) good luck
3) Hot swap. I'd get a pipe made with an IAT bung that you can swap. Then, keep the NBO2 unplugged and swap the WB for the narrow band when inspecting
4) Are you using the factory O2 signal wire or something else to get signal from the MTX-L to the MS2? If so, get a little spade connector and plug it into the factory O2 sensory clippy. When it's time to inspect the car, unplug the WB sensor wire from the factory clippy, plug in the NB sensor, install the NB sensor.

1) I'm kinda wondering why not just do it on the driver side, but I guess the MAP hose and IAT wires will be on the passenger side, so I might as well route them into the car sooner rather than later and just pass them behind the radio to the MS?

2) I wonder if I can just get some thing sheet metal that has 4 holes for the MS and two tabs that bend to line up with the OEM ECU mounting points...

3) Hmm. I've got an RB header on the car. So, if I understand what you're saying, I'd need to pull that off the car and have an additional bung welded in so that I can have the NBO2 and the WBO2 sensors both in the pipe? Maybe it was wishful thinking on my part, but I thought I'd be able to just replace the NB with with the WB sensor and splice the WB's NB simulator wire into the NBO2's harness. But as I think about it now, there are 4 wires in the NBO2 harness... so it couldn't be that simple could it...

4) The MTX-L came with the sensor, and a long harness that connects to the gauge. From the gauge, there are several wires, one of which is the WB output to the ECU. So I guess I'll need to extend that wire to wherever the MS can be mounted. Which makes me wonder: can I just ziptie the stock NBO2 senosor somehwere with it's harness still connected, then intercept the output wire from it before it gets to the OEM ECU, and then hook up the WBO2' NB simulator wire instead? I obviously have no clue what I'm talking about, just thinking out loud. I'm not sure what all the NBO2's wires do. Is what I suggested just wrong?

Pick your poison, I'd rather not deal with the steering wheel. Its like when people stole car stereos years ago, they always did it on the passenger side because either they were left handed or they didn't want to deal with the steering wheel in their way.

When it comes time to inspect, I would swap the custom pipe/bung with the factory air meter, unscrew the WB sensor and pull the MTX-L output wire from the connector, then plug-in the factory connector and screw in the WB sensor.

The four wires on the factory NB sensor are the same wires in the loom on your WB sensor. I want you to only connect the signal wire from the MTX-L controller (output 1 most likely) into the factory signal wire.

You want to unplug the sensor your not using. I don't know how Dimitris wires these so I can't help much more.

DIY autotune sells those little single prong connector thingies which the send out with MSpnp to plug loose wires into factory connectors for the IAT on an NA.. If you order them, I need three and I'll swing by your place and pick them up.

Where is a good place to find 12v for the WB?

I'm also looking for the "here's what you do after the car starts" thread...

Are you talking a constat 12v? or a switched?
If constant, I ran a FUSED wire (like you would for an amplifier) right off my alternator terminal directly to my WBO2 controller.
Switched, I found a 12v source under the dash and tapped into it.

Hi Allen, Do you have to plug into the OBDII plug for emissions? You will have to completely hook it to stock and no codes to pass. Where I live I'm screwed. I'm looking into registering the car at my parents house in Missouri. I have until June.
I posted a couple pics of the brackets I used on Rev's group buy thread. A popular place to 12v the wide band is at the cig lighter. Look at how they recommend for the grounds. On the drivers side there is a rubber grommet where the wiring loom goes inside. You can run more wires through there.

Get the WB working first before installing the MS

Thanks

There is a rubber grommet in the engine bay where the wiring loom goes thro the bulkhead. pull this out of the bulk head, puch a hole in it, pass a wire coathanger into the bulkhead, look for wire inside the car, attach MTX-L cable to wire with tape, pull back to engine bay. connect up.

Dont know, mines RHD.

Yes, use the brown NB output from the MTX-L to send signal to your OEM ECU, use yellow to MS. Leave the MTX-L in all the time.

thanks for the feedback. I did route the WB wire and MAP hose etc. through that gromet.

For the WB wiring to the stock ECU, do I just cut the stock sensor harness and only connect the brown wire to the sensor wire (leaving the other three wires cut)?

I always look for a chance to remind everyone about the outputs on the WB. Yellow is #1, brown is #2...and I refuse to believe this is mere coincidence. lol
