Default Starting build (slowly)

I have a fairly stock 2001 that I've owned for 13 years. I now have 140k on it. I'm pretty sure that I'm going to buy the MK turbo kit. My first step is to get engine management and learn how to use it while stock. I was thinking the MSPN pro is the one I need. My friend has had Braineak build his. Can anybody tell me how to go about initiating him to build a unit and is this what I really need.

My 2nd step is probably get the turbo kit and buy all the extras I need for install. I'll try to nurse the clutch for a while. Figuring on Act competition clutch eventually. I have a very limited but steady incoming toy budget and I would expect maybe up to a year to get all the money and parts together to do it correctly. I want a reliable car with just some more power. Under 200 hp is fine. Any input from anybody will help.

Dont feel bad. I saved my money and parts supply for 2 years. It was on jack stands for 16 months. Buy good ****. However long it takes. I warn you though, it's hard to stay motivated when it takes that long. You can find in my thread, where I wanted to give up. Twice. Made it through though, now I have a really nice, reliable, mustang muncher.

I started my build with a Braineack MS3 and an Innovate LC2. I followed it up later with 550cc injectors. Its not difficult, but you will spend more time fine tuning the little stuff than you will tuning fuel and ignition.

You can PM brain to purchase.

Joe, glad to see you on the site and going forward with your eventual turbo plans. You're going to have to drive my car once I get the turbo on, that'll have you hooked for sure.

Braineak has a for sale thread that gives you a little information on what he's sells and you can shoot him a PM. https://www.miataturbo.net/miata-par...ssembly-14598/

I'll be ordering the MS in a couple days. Should I get (and have the MS set up for) bigger injectors and a wideband sensor? Does the OEM ECU still control knock? If so I think I'm looking at the MS3X without knock control. Car is stock now, except for 5x timing wheel, which I'd probably replace with the stock one when the MS goes in. It's hard to get timing right with it. I'm running at 15 degrees now. If so any suggestions what I should get? I will be buying the MK turbo setup in the future and want to start preparing car.

Given my tendency to run the car hard, how long should I expect a stock clutch to last? Clutch will most likely be my last upgrade, unless I should do it before turbo install for simplicity sake. I see that Flyin Miata FM clutch is rated for 318 lbs, and is about $350. The Act HD is rated 218 lbs, and is about $400. I'm thinking that the FM set is a better deal.

I just installed the FM ll clutch. Medium heavy pedal pressure IMO, but really easy to drive with.

You definitely want a wideband as soon as the MS goes in, I like the AEM UEGO for being cheap and simple.

I would probably go ahead and do injectors at the same time. Either the Force Flow 610cc or RX8 yellows 440cc would be sufficient for your plans. If you want to wait on those to spread out your expenses there's nothing wrong with using the stock injectors for now. Later it's easy to adjust the tune as needed for bigger injectors.

The OEM ECU goes in the trash so it won't be controlling anything. I did not get knock control on my MS, so I can't really comment on it's effectiveness. So far sticking with a safe tune has been sufficient for me without knock control.

You will want to swap back to the stock timing wheel before swapping in your MS. You'll use the software to adjust the tune rather than just mechanically tricking the ECU into doing it.

If you purchase a MS3x from Braineack you have to ask for the knock module, it is an extra cost, he is also out of town currently so won't be building any MS's for the next few weeks. I believe both the MSPNPPro and the MS3basic from MSLabs have the knock module built in. Get the car running on your stock injectors and learn to tune. Then install the larger injectors and retune. Then buy the FM1 clutch and install it before the turbo. The stock clutch won't hold the power that my setups make at all.

That's an Innovate LC-2, it's an option but different from the AEM gauge. I think the Innovate is a bit more finicky with wiring and calibration than AEM.

I just bought a new AEM gauge from these guys, enjukuracing.com. They're close by so shipping is quick and that's about the best price you'll find.

I'm ready to start ordering a few things. As soon as I figure out which injectors to tell Brainiak I'm using. I saw these injectors, but they are 660cc. I'll order the AEM wideband that pdexta mentioned as well. When I see how my toy account has survived I might be able to order a clutch. I did call a friend with a lift and air tools. He said I could do the clutch there.

These are 440cc. Which one do you think will suit my needs better.

I ordered the AEM wideband and the yellow 440cc rx8 injectors. I also pm'ed Braneak about building the squirt. Hopefully in the near future I'll be able to get these parts installed. It looks like it's going to take a while for the ecu though. That's cool with me because I'm going to need to scrape up many more hundreds of dollars before I can move on after this. I don't know what the ecu costs or if I want/need knock sensor. I'm leaning towards not needing.

As stated above, the flow force injectors are world's better than the 440's. You saved like 100 bucks for inferior equipment. Why did you do that?

Op, we have the technology... it CAN be better.

What you get out of the newer injector is a better spray pattern (ev14), and a more controllable pulse per putt (corkyisms).

The ev14 injectors are to be desired also for achieving efficiency & gas mileage.

With your current purchase of the rx8 injectors, be sure to send them out for a good cleaning and get your flow numbers

Then you can have more than the price of good injectors, into less good injectors.

I'm not trying to be too much a cheapskate. I am a noob. In an earlier post it was mentioned using the RX-8 injectors. I did some research and it seemed that 440cc would adequately suite my needs. The ones I have the link to have been remanufactured and flow tested. I have been dickering about the price, on the best offer thing.

If the flow force injectors are that much better I will get them. $100 is dear to me but I know i have to spend money to get anywhere. I'll sit on this purchase for today.

I told Braineak in my build request that I was going to use 440cc injectors. If the ecu is set up for them can I fire the car up and tune to the bigger ones? My knowledge of turbo mechanics is beginning right now. I don't want to do anything stupid. I appreciate any comments, even if they are not particularly to my liking.
