Default MS3x standalone DIY na6 install, looking for some help

Hi all, sorry if I'm going full potato on this one but after a few days of searching I was unable to find a specific guide for what I'm after, i.e. a miata specific guide as opposed to the general MS install guide. If something already exists I'd love a pointer and I'll be on my way, otherwise...

I have an N/A na6 (still undecided on power options at the moment) with the intention of running an MS3X as a standalone.

I recently purchased the ms3 DIY kit along with the expander board. After reading Brain's great writeup on a parallel install with just the ms3 board I was hoping there was a similar one for a stand-alone including the expansion, or is it simply a matter of installing the card and then changing the wiring harness to accomodate?

Just making sure I have all my bases covered;
- I will need to purchase a 'real' tps
- I'm not sure I understand the IAC, is that just wiring up a circuit for it/even necessary?
- The missus gets rather sad when I don't have the air-con running, is there anything specific for an NA6 or can I just follow any miata guide for wiring that up?

I'd really appreciate any help/ideas/first hand experience/ice cream you want to send my way!

I went through this about a year ago. There are TONS of megasquirt info on the internet. This specific forum especially.

But to try an answer your questions...the expansion card will take over some features that the standard board would usually do and add features that the standard board can't do.

You do not HAVE to purchase a variable TPS, though it is highly recommended and will help out a lot in tuning and using the features that depend on the throttle position. I wired up a Wells 201 TPS with mine and makes things much easier.

I am still in a confused state with how the IAC works with the MS. Personally, mine wouldn't idle low enough with it, but with it capped, it idles fine except for when the car is cold. It has to do with idle settings in Tuner Studio that I have yet to figure out, but there is info all over.

I don't have air conditioning but there is an idle up feature in Tuner Studio, so there is probably a circuit for that, but I never payed attention to it. I'm sure someone can help you out with this.

Hope I helped in some way, but I'm still a noob myself. It's an experience indeed. Feel free to check out my MS3X build thread. I ask a lot of questions so it may help clear up some things for you.

These are like 2006 questions.

• You dont NEED a vtps, but you WANT one.
• the idle PWM circuit is within the expander board.
• a/c feed forward is built into software.

This will help you: 90-97 MS3 with MS3X | My Westfield MX5 90-97 MS3 with MS3X | & Megasquirt site

I worked with frank on this updated ms3x assembly guide. You can choose to do your harness is that manner or not, but the main thing is the assembly instructions. The basemap: https://dl.dropbox.com/u/3961412/ms3...tune_90-93.msq matches the pinout sheet. You'll notice that 1Q is a/c in, and 1J is a/c out.

Happy to help. I wouldn't say it's running smoothly because I still have little to no idea how to work a lot of the stuff in tuner studio. I wish there were some locally to show me what's up, but sadly there is none. But nontheless, it runs and i have driven it some.

And there goes Brain saving the day again. The write up he linked is basically what got me through my build once I found it.
