Hi MTers,

in preparation of my MS1 install on my 99 I try to do as much reading as possible and find as much information to get it running fast and without too much problems.

One of the question that occured to me was, how do I set the 90-97 CAS timing on the 99. If I leave the spark wires on the boomslang connected with the OEM ECU I know that the timing is set fixed to 10° BTDC - so if I am thinking correctly - I should be able to set the MS timing even without a timing light, as I just have to correct the setting in the MS until it shows 10° - is this correct? Or do I have a complete mistake in my thinking?

Hiho,
do you prepare it for stand alone or piggy?
If you going the piggy way without ignition control by the ms, i think you donīt have to touch anything about timing, because your oem ecu takes care of it.
But if i you are going to control the timing with the ms, itīs necessary to do the timing setup with the fixed angle.


Maybe you shoot me an pm, so we could fix it german style.

You have a complete mistake in your thinking.

The readout in the MegaTune software is not a feedback mechanism showing actual conditions. It's just an adjustment. What you need to do is to connect the MS to the coils (disconnecting them from the stock ECU), set the ignition advance at 10° in Megatune, and then use a timing gun to see whether or not it is in fact at 10°. Then you adjust the trigger angle in the software until the timing gun shows you that the ignition is in fact firing at 10°. That done, release the ignition back to the map by entering -10.

On a first start, I like to disconnect the fuel injector harness and watch the pulley with the timing gun while somebody cranks the engine. This way you can verify that you're not 180° out, and that the timing is at least close, before you actually give the engine any fuel to burn.

I was just going to post this question

I'm staging MS in on my '99 this way:
-Connect all sensors to MS including NA CAS
-Take over fuel w/ MS
-Take over spark w/ MS (couple of months)

I've installed the NA CAS.

If I'm just running fuel on MS, do I have to enter a precise trigger angle? I have no way of finding out what that is since the megasquirt isn't firing the coils and the NA CAS isn't connected to the stock ECU (obviously)

Does MS have to know the exact timing to inject the fuel?

No, it doesn't have to be exact for fuel-only. The fuel can be quite a good bit out of phase without you ever noticing.

Thanks @ Chico and Joe Perez - that was, what I did want to know - I want to controll ignition with the MS, so I have to get myself hold of a timing light, when I install the MS. (International Dispatch, August 24, 2008, 4:31 am, ISC MIAMI FL (USPS) - so another couple of days until it has finally cleared the German customs and is in my hands)
