Default 2 problems away from first time start.....

I'm currently programming my ms2 to get ready for my first start. Unfourtunetly i have 2 problems....

1. When i turn the key to on, i hear alot of rapid clicking noises.

2. I get the intake back fire that im not supposed to be getting using the improved spark drivers. (scared the **** out of me)

Any thoughts?

I followed the instructions for the ms2 extra spark input (4g63)
I used the improved spark drivers found here:
https://www.miataturbo.net/forum/t33964/
I set my megasquirt with ms2 extra setting, except i put in spark = inverted.

3. should i just mod the ms2 to use ms2 extra output circuit as well? If so does it do the tell tale pop.

Thanks

1. Do you have a boost solenoid installed?

2. shouldn't be happening, and shouldn't be loud/crazy enough to scare you.

1. Are you sure your battery is charged? That's the noise it makes when it is low and can't get enough juice to start.

2. That should not be happening. Are you sure you have the upgraded ingition setup?

No boost solenoid is installed, or even the circuit for it for that matter.
Poping wasn't too bad, but i only have half my intake piping installed and a little smoke rolled out. The rapid clicking noise is coming from somewhere in the engine bay. I just turning the key to on, not even trying to start the thing. It happens for about 3 secs then goes away. Still stumped. I will do some more checking when i get home.

Well i guess im going to mod my spark output circuit again. Does anyone know if this output circuit would have the popping symptom?

Does this happen at turn-on, or during cranking?

Did you set SparkOutInv = Yes?

I did set it to invert, yes. I also fetched the info from the ecu and it matched.
It happened on turn on, I haven't tried cranking yet, i will when i work out these problems

So the clicking noise is coming from my iac. I found this out by changing the iac settings to an on /off switch. The clicking noise stops. I turn pwm warmup on and it starts again. I Just verified my circuit with the multimeter is good, next im going to check the wiring.

ok, so i played with the frequencies on the iac and it stopped clicking.... Not sure if it is set right now or what setting i need for ms2 extra.

I went ahead and tried to start the car. It will crank for about 3 secs and then the engine seems to lock. I can stop cranking, then try again and it does the same thing. Sometimes there is a pop when it stops. Checking the spark, it seems to miss the first couple sparks then starts to go. I have a battery charger on the car, so that isn't the problem. Im guessing that the timing is off or not firing right to start.... here are the settings i used http://www.msextra.com/doc/ms2extra/...s/4g63_MT1.GIF
I used spark inverted though because i have the improved spark output.
Any Thoughts??

GREAT SUCCESS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

It ended up i have the spark output wires swapped.

I swapped the spark plugs, and it started up just like factory!!
Thanks all that helped. Got a couple of things still to do, but at least it runs!!

My current setup is a 90 miata naturally aspirated w/ ms2 extra, lc-1, gm iat using factory coils. Step one turbo build complete!
Anyone with questions for this kind of setup let me know.
GTG... I have some work to do to on the launch control circuit.

Damn, first time reading this thread, and I was going to suggest swapped spark outputs. Smoke out the intake is the combustion happening and then the intake valves opening, I think. But good job fixing it! I know exactly how rewarding that is when it starts up perfect after hours of trouble shooting.

You are an incredible newb for doing MS and wideband before your turbo, I wish I had done exactly that.

Thanks, im kind of a perfectionist. So i decided to have all the electronics in order first, get used to tuning then turbo it. Im hoping to have it turboed by spring so that i can show up at the first autocross of the season with boost.
