The price is so-so.

The MS1 certainly isn't useless, but a lot of features have been vastly improved in the MS2 and 3, to the point where I wouldn't recommend the MS1 for new installs.

the MS1 has its limitations, but will run a BP with no issues. what is your goals for the car?

Ms1 will do the job, but like joe said if you have the budget spring for the MS2 or have it upgraded later.

just so you know, I sold an ms1 v3.0 with a plug and play harness for 200 shipped recently. It was a great price, but that's also the price I bought it at. 350 is way overpriced

You could run MS1 in parallel to just do timing and fuel...
That's a really easy way to learn MS and it gets the job done for cheap.

**** parallel. It should have never been done on a MS. I guess KingfLeet's legacy will never end if that ever stays as a suggestion.

$350 is too much, but... if you can get a fully built, tested and functional PNP-ready MS1 for around $200...

I'm surprised that no one mentioned you can upgrade it to an MS2. $111 daughter card and maybe some light reconfiguring and you'd be good to go.

You could even upgrade it to an MS3 if you really wanted to. $199 MS3 board plus $40 for a case. You could have an MS3 PNP for a total investment of $440 if you could pick up that MS1 for $200.

And, of course, you could make it an MS3X for another $90. Worth every penny.

As long as it's on a 3.0 board, it's NOT obsolete technology. I expect MS1's are going to start coming up dirt cheap in the near future. Will be a good opportunity for the savvy MS builder.

Surely an ms1 is worth more than $200 when the kits still sell for ~207. Are they being built for free these days?

doesn't matter; they are antiquated.

no one should be building these at all these days. Even at $207 for the kit, you can make the harness for another $20-30 or so in parts.

While the MSI can work just fine on the miata, the ms2 is much better for not much more cost (when you figure a v3.0 DIY built unit with harness), and then the ms3x is EVEN better and still not much more cost.

If I was on a budget, I'd go for a ms2 on a v3.0 board and go with seq. fueling, with real closed loop code and a/c fee forward.

IIRC I was building PNP MSI units w/ait sensor for $350 shipped back in 2007.

Yeah, I agree with you. I recall paying $400+ for one of those units in '09. Hence the shock of said resale value around $200.

I have two opinions here:

First, I consider someone else's assembled kit to be worth less than an unassembled kit. This is mostly a personal bias, as I prefer building them myself.

Second, and much more importantly, I would not consider the MS1 for any new install on anything more complex than a lawn mower, regardless of price. If the local pet store normally charges $100 for a live kitten, but offers a dead kitten for $5, I still would pay the extra $95 for the live kitten. $5 is $5 more than a dead kitten is worth, since regardless of the price, a dead kitten lacks the featureset of a live one. The MS2/3 are actually capable of closed-loop idle, for one thing, and that is priceless.
