Hello Everyone

Im pretty new here, but anways i have a 1990 Turbo Miata
My miata was never realy tuned properly, only a rough tune.
Now im trying to get it tuned by a shop here in my area and would like as much help possible to get my car running at its best.

I had my maita tuned at the shop for the first time, it was running better than before, but still im having some problems. One of them is, rev jumps back n forth sometimes. For example, i would rev up to like 6000rpm or something then it would like drop to maybe 5000rpm then jump back up to 6000 realy quick. Another problem is, my car is tuned alright for when its warm, but when my car is cold and im jus starting it up, it will almost want to die(stalls on me), so i have to keep revving it to not let it die, then drive out, and when it warms up, the idle will be smooth at 1100rpm. I was told i need a cold tune?

Also how much boost do u think my miata will be able to handle? What amount of boost is safe for my miata? How can i raise the boost? I was told i could only raise my boost using a boost controller? Or are there other methods of doing it? Right now my miatas only about 7-8psi and i would like to get it a bit faster!


Please help!!! So i can tell this info to my tuner and hopefuly he wil be able to help me tune my miata to the best it can be.

Try capturing a data log of the jumping RPM behavior and posting it here.

For the cold start, it sounds like you need more warm up enrichment, unless it's blowing great clouds of black smoke, in which case you would need less.

How do i get more boost in my turbo? I heard solenoid would work but is there any other ways? Also heard there is a lever on the turbo that can adjust the boost, is that true?
By lookin at my car domain page, how much boost do u think i am able to run that would be safe for my car that would also allow my setup to last a while?

With a boost controller, manual or electronic. No, definitely no "lever on the turbo".

I'd highly recommend finding a shop that knows what they are doing, and can help guide you through everything. Unless you are doing the tuning yourself, you need somewhere that actually cares about getting your car running well, otherwise you will always have issues like cold start and such.
Otherwise, datalog the issues we are talking about and post it up here so we have some data to look at.

Oh, and good luck with those wheels, make sure to watch for cracks and ditch the front plate, it blocks airflow to your intercooler and radiator.

Edit: You should also do some searching and spend some time reading threads on here, you will learn a lot. Only after you have searched and can't find anything should you post a question.

how do you drive a turbo miata and not even know that the actuator opens up at your said 7-8psi of boost and call it a lever, i'm a bit jealous here...

pull your actuator off and you'll get unlimited boost!!! j/k

Im going to find another shop to tune my car i think, cause the previous shop that tuned my miata for 200$.. they said i need a boost controller to raise boost, and the solenoid i have on my car, he diidnt even see it? I think he was bullshitting:S I didint know before, but now i know whats a solenoid and im sure the tuner couldnt have missed it. So i think im gonna find another tuner to tune my miata!

Here's a couple of serious suggestions.

First, for the time being, forget about "finding a shop" and learn how to at least connect to your MS with a laptop, take datalogs, and save MSQ files. It's quite possible that with the collective body of knowledge on this board that we'll be able to glean useful information from this and offer advice that "some shop" might not be able to. Also, go to http://www.msextra.com/manuals/MS_Ex...nual_Index.htm and read the whole thing. Every single part. Twice. A lot of it will be technically irrelevant, but you'll learn useful concepts.

Second, purchase this book and read it cover to cover. Then read it again: http://www.amazon.com/Maximum-Boost-...0301574&sr=8-1 No offense, but it seems obvious that you are not intimately acquainted with how turbocharger systems work in general. There is a lot of fundamental knowledge in that book that will help you to understand how and why certain parts of your car work, and that understanding will be helpful both in describing to us and others the things that you are encountering as well as helping you to make better judgments and observations about your car.

Look under the DIY section on this forum and read Everything all in one big post. It helped me alot. It Covers timing, boost, and fueling needs etc. etc.

Corkey Bell told me that you can run 12psi all day long with no issues to the motor. After that you are starting to stress things. You can get a manual boost controller for $12 up on ebay. The electric boost solenoid is controlled by ms or a controller.
The one guy was giving you sarcasim with the unlimited boost. You will blow your motor.
