Default Spring is here, tuning time.

I am just now getting started tuning my mspnp(finally). Car is a 1.6 1990 with mspnp, greddy turbo, FMIC, 2.5" downpipe/exhaust, 550cc rx7 injectors, afm delete(iat added), etc. If it matters, I live at about 7200ft above sea level.

I started with forum member benr's map(also 550cc inj, greddy turbo, and closer to my altitude at 5200ft). I adjusted his map for my wbo2, reset the dwell settings back to stock(he has cops), and set the base timing for my car.

Now, ive just started tuning so only thing I have touched is the idle, I really just want to make sure I'm on the right track at this point.

I attached my current .msq and a datalog of my car idling. Ive actually yet to tune anything over idle because I have a new fuel pump and fuel filter waiting to go in on my day off. Let me know if anything jumps out at you.

Edit: Im mainly concerned about the log file. Looks to me like there might be some noise, but i r a noob. Also, that log was done with the rad fan on.

Heh what was I thinking, nobody wants to open these files. Here is a screenshot with a log of the car at idle and the msq open in mlv. Installed my fuel pump and filter and now I'm ready to start datalogging/analyzing. I really just want to know if this log looks normal or not to you, the lines seem all over the place to me, but the min/max values it recorded are correct. Just a little concerned after reading all these threads about noise etc.



Note that this is at idle with fans running, never revved the motor for this log.

That log is nothing like what it should be. You have major noise or connection issues.

I was afraid of this. I grounded everything to the engine block near the factory ECU ground. I am also using a serial to usb adapter, the one diyautotune sells. I guess I get to play with grounds tomorrow. How major of an issue am i looking at?

Edit: Any hints for tomarrow when i try to tackle this problem? I assume start with wbo2/ecu grounds and go from there?

Why did you log Idle? VE analyzer never gets idle right you have to do it manually, and if you want to use VE analyzer for the rest of your tune turn off accel enrichments before you log or it will mess things up. Also I just looked at your log again and you may not have to much noise, because just idling you min and my of each variable are so close together that it takes up the whole graph with very little movement, for example since during your log you only changed not even 200 rpm a 150 rpm change takes up the whole graph, if you would have reved the engine up to 3 or 4,000 rpm and then stop the log you would notice that the graph would be closer normal looking.

This is exactly what i was thinking. I logged the idle mainly just to have a log, I'm not tuning the idle using the ve analyzer i did it by hand. Ill take another log going through a larger rpm/map range and see how it comes out. Thanks for the input.

Okay so a little bit of an update, would like to get some more insight from the masters. New fuel pump and filter are in, i cleaned up the grounds with sandpaper to expose more metal to metal surface, and moved the wbo2 ground from sharing the same post as the ecu.

I did a log going to and from the gas station that is right down the street today, and tried to hit quite a few more cells to get a better idea of my noise issues, and to see how my tune is looking.

Afrs were all over the place as expected, but analyzing a few logs through mlv should fix that. Mainly i just want to see if you think my noise issues are over, does this log look better?



I also attached the datalog pictured, and the .msq is included in my first post. I really appreciate your input and time.

Wow. After looking at that log I can tell I have some problems. The mspnp itself is grounded through the stock ecu's location, correct? Any ideas where i should start first to tackle the noise issue? Noise is what is causing this correct?

Edit: on second thought and after looking over my maps more, it seems they do have a bit of noise but for the most part everything seems correct in the logs, and correlates perfectly with the map when viewed in MLV. My question is, are theses logs to noisy to tune with via MLV?

Also, how do i get it to show my IAT on the logs? IAT seems to work great in megatune and in the car, just want to make sure im on the right track here.

No problem. Thats actually a fairly old log of mine. All my latest logs look like crap with RPM spikes that screw everything up. No idea wtf the problem is.

You certainly do have noise issues. I'm no expert on them as I haven't had to deal with much in the way of noise. What I have noticed in my car is that my logs look like poopy if I have the faceplate on my CD player. Not to say that is your problem.

In MLV if you want to view your IAT, click on one of the Quick Views on the left and i'm pretty sure its MAT. I haven't actually checked out my IAT in MLV before but the MAT numbers on my logs make the most sense. Must be Manifold Air Temp.

Good luck with your noise issues. I think you should try pat's thing and see how it helps.

Thanks for the response, let me know if you figure anything out on yours. I have been reading up more on noise threads, but most noise issues seem to be on home built ms. Since i have pnp, it appears to all be grounded through the stock location.. which should not be noisy.

Also, i figured MAT was my IAT. My MAT shows up super noisy in the logs though, but reads fine in megatune. Strange.

If anyone has any suggestions, throw em at me. Until then ill be reading up on noise issues as much as possible.

I fixed (I think) my noise problem, was a loose ground on the battery. I also ended up also having a bad alternator, which left me stranded the other day while logging. I replaced that, now hopefully I can start working on my tune.



What do you guys think? Looks way better to me. Also attached the log file if interested.

Also I am a bit confused on one thing. Does https://www.miataturbo.net/forum/t28005/ apply when tuning in MLV? Because my AFR target tables in MLV right now all are already shown in AFR, not Volts. Would doing what is mentioned in the above thread be of any benefit to me?

P.S. Also, both Megatune and MLV work flawlessly in Windows7, although I had some permissions issues with the Megatune install folder. Wouldnt allow me to save logs at first.
