Default Scared to burn to ECU........

Ok ive had this problem twice now. One resulted in me having to get a taxi ok.

I go out logging
Pull over
Open MLV and load the log and .msq.
Run VE analyser excluding the cells around idle
Save the .msq.
This is all with the car idling.
Then, I open the new saved map in MT, and click to burn to ecu.
The car faulters as it does when burning.
Then stalls and wont start.
All gauges on MT stop working, no response from them when cranking etc
MAP reading is stuck at 189kpa
So, first I try resending various maps, nothing. Gauges all stuck where they are. Restart laptop etc, all the same.

Unplug coils, resend firmware, resend map. Ah were working now. I can blow down the MAP line etc and get a reading. So I turn Ignition off, and replug my igniters. Ignition back on, oh look were back at 189kpa. Nothing working. Now I tried this about 10 times and it didnt work. Rang my friend to collect me and pushed the car to a corner of the car park out of the way. Tried it one more time, and low and behold, it works?

Wtf is going on?

Don't do that.

Export VE table only (yellow arrow on table) from MLV, import that and burn. Save new map afterwards.

Good tip. I, too -- probably like many other people here -- have always just burned a whole new .msq file after the MLV process. I only got "burned" once or twice re: having to reflash the MS. Your way sounds safer.

You should never reflash the whole msq with the car running. Just burn the table.

This is good to know, I've always just reburned the entire MSQ. I havent had any problems yet.

I always reburned the entire msq too and I must say there were a few times when it didn't feel quite right afterwards. But on the whole it had been okay. As rule though, the car always acts a bit funky whenever I burn or send anything.

What's the actual reasoning behind not doing it this way?

I do this [load full msqs] like 7 times a day without issues...

I've been doing this ever since the ms install. I read it on some older thread, and ever since i started tuning I've used this method.

Not one failure yet.

Although I have had megatune crash a few times while loading .msq's.

If your saying that, when DO you send a new .msq? When just the ignition is on?

I had this again last night and fully expected for it to happen. It only ever happens when sending a .msq, not when burning a table.

I still dont understand the whole thing where I send new firmware, send a .msq file and its working and responding, then turn off and plug in igniters and it goes **** again?

I mean, it's not like you cant burn a map while the car is ON, but not running....

DIY told me this was fine a few years ago when I had newb questions. How is your connection to the computer?

I've done it over 1,000,000 times with very few issues. Something is funky on yours...probably a com-port / USB failure.

+1

I finally went and bought a good gigaware adapter from RadioShack after beating myself up the first three days, and have never had a problem since.

Hell, I've burned full .msqs while driving down the highway after logging/analyzing a really nice curvy road I just turned off of.

am I the only one who will drive down the highway, let off the gas, and hit "burn" at speed, then drive as normal?

I thought I'd get flamed for that, but am glad to hear two of the members I admire the most here do the same ****.

I originally wanted to respond to the OP that it might be a grounding issue. If your MS/WBO2 aren't grounded properly, or need a bigger wire/better contact...you can have issues.

I did have my car die while burning at idle once, and it told me insufficient controller voltage. I upgraded the ground wire and never saw it happen again.

When you say upgraded the ground wire, do you mean the 6 black wires in the harness?

I could burn a table when driving down the road no problem, .msq's are a different story though

The Serial/USB adapter I have is no cheapy effort. It was £20 and is a known good one

Without knowing the year of your ride (try putting info in sig line) or where you're at (obviously UK, but you should put this in User CP) I can't tell you where your ground wires are.

Mine is where I wired my MS and LC-1 WBO2 sensor grounds together, soldered them to one single ground wire that goes through firewall to the lug on the back of the manifold where factory ECU and sensor ground. I used a larger gauge wire (14) and soldered it to that same lug.

One time, a few years ago I was taken hostage by the Iranians during my visit with Jenson Button in Bahrain to do some deep-sea fishing and give him a few tips on the track in my miata. To make a long story short, after a few days of captivity I managed to escape by throwing a couple grenades into their quarters and abducting their commanding officer, who also disclosed the location of Osama bin Laden which I forgot because I was drinking Champaign more expensive per bottle than your house, and because Bush changed his # recently and he didn't hit me up on facebook with the new #.

I utilized the CO as a human shield to exit the palace while saving the future F1 superstar, then had Jenson plug in my computer so I could burn the new MSQ I worked on the day before we were attacked. Then I mortally wounded the CO and went back to my super-yacht with the fresh MSQ in my Miata, which Jenson is insanely jealous over, to the harem-room where I satisfied 20-1000 supermodels who all agreed that I was undoubtedly the sexiest man in the world.
