Default Damnit ... Gotta smog already

I honestly dont know whats up with this because I swear I bought the car in April 2005 and it was smogged right then? I suppose it is just because the registration was renewed in November doh ...

So what sort of AFRs do i need to pass the sniffer test? I just installed a 3" exhaust system with a brand new catalytic converter so it shouldnt be too difficult to pass on the squirt. Im thinking up the idle to around 1k, run 14:1 for that, and then for the 15 and 25mph I believe they use 2nd gear and what sort of AFRs should I be targeting for those ranges? As for the visual, I am hoping that I can find a shop to just take it as is and I gotta get a hold of begi to send me my CARB sticker like today.

I am running the mspnp fuel and ignition map (I had to retard the boost timing a few degrees though) currently with good results overall
Anything else?

I can't tell you how to make a standalone pass a sniffer test-- but I can tell you that catalytic converters are designed to do their job at 14.7:1, and if I were tuning a standalone equipped race car for best emissions (for eco-friendly racers maybe) I'd make sure it cruised at a steady 14.7:1 AFR, or as close as possible with EGO correction turned off. Then I might turn on EGO correction aiming for 14.7:1, with 1% steps, 5% authority, and steps maybe 150-200 msec apart.

I was supposed to go for an emissions test by today.
Instead I paid the taxes and got a 15 day extension. Had other **** to do. :gay:

FWIW, taxes on the miata were only $25. By comparison our truck was $90 and MB which renews in Feb was around $200 last year.

gotta love it. My smog check may well cost as much if not more than the $54 registration. Anyway, so I suppose I will be shooting for 14.7 then and I would be willing to bet that with my freshly rebuilt motor and that catalytic converter I have a bit of leeway as it is. I mean the old 1.6 with 24k and an old cat passed emissions alright so i have no doubt I can pass on megasquirt.

I agree. A well tuned turbo car should pass w/o a problem, since passing the smog test would mean the car has a good tune. I'm assuming the standards become more lenient as the car gets older too (like GA) which gives a lot more tolerance for a 10+ yr. old car.

There's a nice page somewhere (can't find it now) that goes over tuning the megasquirt for emissions. It says what changes to make to increase or reduce certain outputs. I seem to think one thing that was kind of a no-brainer was reducing timing a bit to increase EGTs. Also, general emissions advice, romp the hell out of the car before you drive up for the test, to get that cat nice and hot.

And leave it idling in the parking lot until they are ready to test you... once you shut it off your fun time heating up drive is moot.

akary, check Craigslist. You can find some smoking deals. I smogged my dad's car for $45 including submission to the state and certification ($10 by themselves). The guy's standard price on the wall was like $64 plus cert; CL price was $34, and he was the high-end. I saw several guys offering to do it for $34 cash certified.

I was going to say come to the shop I go to, but you're wayyyyy to far for it to be worth it. The guy who runs it is VERY mod friendly (owns a modified Integra GSR). Big guy, I felt bad for him having to stuff his *** into my Corbeau Clubmans.

Im going to run the car as it sits. It doesnt throw a code and Ill just stick the carb sticker on the thing. I got a cat and Ill just tune for 14.7 so it passes nicely.

I hate DeKalb. Got a speeding ticket. Tried a month to pay it from TN via the telephone via their automated system. The system wouldn't let me pay my ticket, said it was a bad ticket number over and over and no one would answer the phone otherwise. Forgot about it about 3 weeks into trying. 5 weeks after the ticket i was headed back to Atl and decided to pay it. I was being held for contempt of court. The $75 ticket became $200.
F' Dekalb. It was the only highway around that area that was 65 mph instead of 80. Everyone was driving 75, i happened to be doing 80. Anyway, got busted, my mistake.
