Base map for a '94-95 1.8 has it set to 3 or 3.5, I forget. Regardless, we had some throttle tip in issues. It was hesitating for a split second when we'd jam the throttle. Raising it to 4.0 really helped, 4.5 REALLY helped. Even the owner, who's raced more Miatas and other cars than I can fathom, was impressed once we upped it to 4.5.

On another project with a MSPNP gen1 and 1.6, I don't THINK I've changed the running dwell, and it's currently at 5.0.

Both cars run stock ignitors/coils with NGK blue plug wires.

Two questions:

1. Am I on borrowed time with 4.5 dwell with his '94-95 coils?

2. Is the MSPNP and MSPNP2 (and 1.6 vs. 1.8 coils) compatible for dwell settings? Should I just up the 1.8 to 5.0 like the gen1 1.6?

Interested in what responses you get to this question.
My MS2e in the 94 behaves in a similar manner.
Even with the TPSdot threshold set as low as 20%.

Sounds like upping the dwell might be one solution?

Well, the MS9495 map has the dwell set to 3ms.

And for fun I decided to use a bit of Google-fu and found this...

Dwell settings for 1.8 liter coils in the 1994-1997 cars:

These coils charge faster and need slightly less dwell than the 1.6 coils.

Dwell Control: Dwell Control
Cranking Dwell: 7.5 ms
Running Dwell: 4.5 ms

Over at the DIY Auto Tune website.

So, from the sounds of it, maybe 4.5 is bueno?
I went ahead and updated my TS and will see how it acts tomorrow.

I'm fairly certain I'm on 3.3.1.

I checked the readme notes for the 3.3.2 firmware and the only improvement of interest was the updated rev limiter settings.

The coolant based rev-limiter kicks in way too soon, no matter how I configure it with my 3.3.1 and TS 2.6.04.
I've put off disconnecting the coils to update the firmware for now, since it's a fairly easy thing to live with.

Try upgrading to 3.3.2.

I updated to the latest and greatest from DIY when I tuned the car 2-3 weeks ago, 3.3.3.
