Default New pump and injectors and more problems...

Well... Dang... Everything was going so great today.

If you read this thread:

https://www.miataturbo.net/forums/showthread.php?t=9779

You know that I had a serious lean spike because I went to the dyno before I should have.

Anyway... I got up this morning and proceeded to install a new valve cover gasket [Not related to the turbo, but it needed it because I saw some oil in the spark plug wells when I installed the colder plugs.] I next installed some 1.8 tan top injectors, and finally installed a Walbro 190lph HP fuel pump. No problems. It idled great, ran great, etc... I let it idle for a few minutes and checked for leaks. There were none, so I saddled up and took it for a drive.

I ran great and I let it warm up good and decided to take it up a notch and make a few full throttle runs. I'll be danged if my brand new clutch supposedly rated at 225 ft/lbs of torque didn't start slipping as the boost started to peak out. I could have killed somebody.

To top it off when I get back to the garage I smell some gas and open the hood to inspect and there is some gas pooled up near the back two injectors. I was super careful to install new "O" rings and very careful when I put them back in. Dammit!!!

O well... I need to get cleaned up and go see my mom and take her some flowers and stuff. I need a beer. :(

A little grease on the O'rings helps seat them without slicing into them.

Dammit!!! I knew I forgot something. Thanks.

You light up my life...

And give me hope...

To carry on...

Good thing I have already put one clutch in... At least this one won't be that big of a deal. I am going directly to a puck type clutch this time. I drove a friend's Miata with one in it and it wasn't bad at all. I wish i hadn't listened to everyone about the driveability of the puck clutches and installed one from the beginning. Oh well... I can take the one out of the turbo Miata and put it in the 92 Black and tan, it needs one soon anyway and the 92 will never be FI. So it's all good.

Oh... and by the way it's not all gloom and doom. When I took off the valve cover it looked like new up there. I was shocked at how a 150k motor could look that good. Absolutely zero sludge every thing was clear and golden.

A trick that FoundSoul taught me: use some vasoline instead of grease. vasoline disolves in gas. I just put my rail back in. We'll see if I pinched the #3 injector oring again. I almost always do.

What kind of clutch do you have?

I just give a shot of WD40 in there to lube the rings a bit. What kind of clutch did you install... almost all of them take a little time to bed in, even a stock one. You might want to take it easy for a couple hundred miles. If it's a kevlar clutch, maybe about 500-800 miles for the break-in.

I had a small gas leak awhile back... turns out it was my dual feed line to the back of the rail was holding onto the very last ridge on the barb. I crammed it back on and took a few more turns on the little hose clamp... hasn't moved since.

Yeah... But I used up all of the vasoline on my girlfriends b*tt hole trying to fit my johnson in it.

Seriously... I've had a few Bloody Marys now and I am a little more mellowed out. I'm about to go back down there and reinstall the damn things.

The clutch I have in there right now is this one:

http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/EZ-RA...9499QQtcZphoto

After emailing the guy I was under the impression that it would hold 225fwtq and I'll bet I am putting out less than that right now.

Anyway... It is a puck type clutch this time and I may just get a 1.8 liter clutch and flywheel and be done with it. ... Now where the hell is that vasolene?

If you have had a few bloody mary's, I think you are better off trying to install that other thing that you use vasoline on. Leave the injectors for when you have all your wits about you. Ask Philip

I appreciate your concern Olderguy... But I'm Irish and it takes more than a few with me. Please don't take anything I say to seriously... It's all in good fun.

Seriously... I have seen the error of my ways. Upon disassembly and reassembly I noticed that the two rubber spacers that separate the fuel rail from the attachment points were lost and I must have tried to bolt it on anyway. No biggie I just stole them from my other Miata and will get some new ones on Monday. Also... yes one of the "O" rings was deformed, but I used one of the old ones.

So it looks like we are down to a new puck clutch and some tuning.

Well... actually that are hard plastic spacers. I used some synthetic 10W30 motor oil to lube everything up. Put it all back together and now no leakage.

Now... what clutch to buy at a decent price.

Oh yeah... one more thing: Is it just me or are the 1.8 injectors louder than the 1.6's. I can open the engine compartment and I seem to notice the sound of the injectors more than before.

my 1.6 injectors were louder than my 94-97 injectors. My 00 injectors are the quietest by far.

i like the act extreme but the stage 3 ebay was decent to me at under 250 whp. Overall the main problem with the ebay clutches is the weak *** Pressure plate IMO.

I bought one of those $160 ebay clutches once, it was a six puck though. less than 500 miles down the road (non-turbo'ed, the dark ages) the throw out bearing that came with it blew up and took the pressure plate, friction plate, and rear main seal with it. out came the engine.

and now that I've established a decent reason for posting, I am now going to thread hi-jack.

I've got 1.8 injectors and a walbro 190lph hp pump ready to install, but I'm running the vortech afpr with the 'stock' 12:1 disc. 92black&tan, you said you put them in and it ran/idled fine. are you using the vortech afpr? I know I'll have to fiddle with the AFM spring for the injectors, but what do I do about the fuel pump pressure? I've got a MBC (flyin miata style) laying around. I was hoping to use it as a manual boost controller, but would it better serve me on the afpr vacuum line?

Was it the Gripforce F-1 stage 3 with the 6 puck? Because that is the one I am seriously considering.

Well... I'm not to worried about the bearings. The clutch I have in there right now only has about 1000 miles on it and all of the bearings are new OEM Mazda. All I'm going to do is swap out the clutch and pressure plate this time. I may hit the flywheel with some sand paper.

Strangely enough the 1.8 injectors, 190lph hp, and the Vortech are all working fine. I haven't even adjusted the AFM spring yet. I'm sure I'm running rich right now though. But it idles just like it did before. I was actually surprised to notice no difference in driveability.

I am pondering using a simple needle valve for adjustability over at the Vortech.

Would a needle valve work just as good. I mean... In this application do you really want the spring and ball to hold back the initial pressure and do you need the vent hole?

How was the clutch action on that F-1 clutch? I ahve driven a 6 puck [I think it was an ACT] and it wasn't near as bad as everyone makes it out to be.
