If you have $2k to spend, DIY is the way to go. Greddy will get you there, but it won't be as fun!
Zero fabrication skills are needed. The "need some skillz" stuff extends to tapping the oil pan for the turbo drain, and wiring in the Bipes to the factory ECU harness... but even those are about a 2 out of 10 on the difficult scale.

However, don't forget that you're going to need a $300 clutch to hold any power.

Here's what I've spent so far, the ONLY THING LEFT is at the bottom and it's included in my total.

88 RX7 AFM 33.25 Pick'NPull

Total: 2133.06

You can definitely go cheaper... but every part here should last me the life of the car. I'm not afraid of anything I've bought failing or not working as advertised (even my $15 MBC). I also spent $170 extra on 3 turbos I won't use but will be able to resell the extra parts and recoup some money. I'll also be able to resell my stock fuel rail, fuel pump/assembly, and a few other things to end up with a final total expenditure of about $1800. This is $100 over my original budget. Not too bad. This amount of course does not include the Spec Stage II clutch and the half-dozen seals I'll replace while I've got the tranny off of about $400. It also doesn't cover a few hours on the dyno to tune, I've expect about $200 for that.

Those suggestions above are just as good, all depends on what you can source used at the time you decide to start spending money!

Wow, I'd never thought that I'd say this, but.....one option is to save up the extra $700 bucks and get the cheapest BEGI kit for now...<ducks for cover>
FWIW, I am very happy with my GReddy + DIY upgrades, but the BEGI kits are awful tempting for bolt on and go power...

For the extra $700, you get:

1) a much more responsive ball bearing turbo GT2554 that'll spool much earlier than the GReddy (try like 1k rpm sooner, if not more, if still using the stock GReddy DP and stock exhaust)
2) a much better flowing and sized DP
3) "easy" install with pictures/instructions/BEGI support that you can bolt on now instead of collecting all the pieces slowly over time DIY (granted you'll learn a hell of a lot more by doing it yourself, not trying to discourage this if you have the time and willing effort)

Or if money is an issue, just get the GReddy kit now, retard your base timing to 6, install and enjoy 4.5 psi of boost until you figure the rest out. ~$1100 for an extra 30 or so hp NOW!

Final thought is to factor in the cost of all the other "extras" for our older cars, I don't know how much milage you have, but I assume that your car is a 90-93 since you are asking about the GReddy kit so if it's a high milage car, you may need new plug wires ($40), a new clutch ($200+), etc... Those little things really add up over time.

In fact, it's sometimes better to install and upgrade in stages so that it makes troubleshooting easier. Start with the base kit + maybe Tony's DP (so you wouldn't have to put on the Greddy DP just to replace it later) and go from there....ask people who have changed too much at once and try to track down a problem....it sucks...

That thought keeps crossing my mind... I start by thinking I'll just get the base GReddy and enjoy it, but to do things properly I should add Bipes/DP/IC/etc as well...suddenly I'm close to BEGi territory so I may as well save a bit more and buy that...then I'm spending $3k on a kit when I could get a good cheap turbo kit for only $1100 And round and round I go.

if you have another car to daily drive go GReddy and fix it up to make it how you want it. If you dont and this car is your daily go Begi then you wont have to worry about things going wrong and if they do you have SUPER GOOD tech support =P
