So yeah, my old mill has about 154k miles on the clock, it barely passed smog this year and I installed hte turbo at 151k. SO, I figure now is as good a time as any to rebuild. I bought a new used Japanese import engine so it shouldn't have a whole lot of miles on it. I got it for $450 +$125 shipping and a few bucks in taxes since it was a local CA. purchase. I could've saved $40 in shipping by driving my *** down there and picking it up, but I'd lose about 2 years in life just by yelling at stupid drivers in SoCal alone.

ANYWAYS, I plan on doing significant work to this engine. Better pistons and Swain coating them, better conrods, balance the crank, better oil pump, blah blah de blah blah blah. The old engine still works just fine and like I said I passed smog. I just don't want ANY down time in my car, that's why I bought the new one. My question is, does anyone have any good sources for decently priced parts like pistons and conrods? I plan to stay stock size in bore.

Couple things.
Just becuase its from japan (if it is) why would that mean not a whole lot of miles on it?
Why pay 450 for a motor that your gonna rebuild. I would find one locally that is blown, or needs rings or something since your going to be rebuilding anyways.
If it were me, I would do as I said, not pay tha tmuch for a used "JDM" motor. But thats just my .2 cents.

the thing with japanese motors, its like state law that at around 50-60km miles the engines have to removed. so your almost always guaranteed a low milage engine when you buy a japanese one.

That's not even close to being true, and the famous "myth" about JDM motors doesn't have anything to do with mileage... it's about the age of the car.
Japanese automobile taxations policies change as a vehicle gets older. The older the car, the higher the tax... A LOT HIGHER. Car ownership gets to the point that it's cheaper to buy a new car than to keep the older ones running. People will sell their cars to parters, who sell the car out-of-country or dismantle them. The reason the motors don't ever usually have more than about 40k miles on them is that Japanese people as a rule, drive much shorter distances than Americans, and their mass-transit systems are awesome.

well, hey if you got the money to buy a good condition motor, why not. Looks like you are going to have a top notch motor (bottom end at least ... doing headwork too?) for boosting all day long and that is what really counts. Keep us up to date on your progress eh?

As far as I know the Miata crankshaft is neutrally balanced. Any combination of rods/pistons will counterbalance themselfs. 2 up 2 down. H-beams from Belfab are $320. Good price. I bought some. I've read the coating on pistons was started by OEMs to save them from driver abuse during the break-in period. The piston shouldn't contact the cylinder walls anyways. I don't know how beneficial it would be. I'm building a 400hp 1.8 and don't plan on any coatings. As far as these Jap motors go... Think about this... If you KNEW you'd only needed your car to last 50-70k miles would you drive it harder? I sure would. I'd give 2 ***** about it because I wouldn't try to squeeze 150k+ miles out of it. I know I sure beat on rental cars (for example).

Those Belfabs are an AWESOME price! I found them after a Google, if I can't get a good price on Carillos I'll probably opt for the Belfabs. Hell, they're cheaper than the pistons I was looking at!

Well, I'm well into taking things off of the engine. I'll get a pic later, but suffice it to say the Japanese are a wiley people. Has anyone taken the power steering pump bracked off? Here's a cast iron bracket with a bunch of **** in the way of one single bolt that's threaded in like 2.5". I have no clue how they got this damn bolt in and torqued it to the level it was at. So anyone need a PS pump? lol
