just as the title says, i just finished tapping my oil pan for a male 3/8" npt fitting. how should i go about sealing it up ? teflon tape, teflon glue stuff, or can i just use some rtv red gasket maker ?

I used Permatex's "The Right Stuff" gasket maker on mine. It really depends on how tight (and deep) the threads came out from your tap job. Mine were very tight, so I used silicone sealant. If your threads are loose, I would recommend thread sealant.

I wouldn't recommend loctite unless your threads are very loose. In that case, Loctite makes a thread sealer, but I've had a hard time finding it in stores.

I'm not a fan of JBweld in general, but if you're not happy with how the tap job came out, it could help tighten things up.

I used thredlock Red on the threads, and JB welded the rest to the outside of the pan.

Black permatex would work good as well.

JB weld is the best and most rugged solution i my opinion unless you weld a nut on the pan then you will never get ideal sealing and vibration protection. If the line gets moved to much, or vibrates to much etc then the seal will fail and you will have a nice and annoying leak? GL man.

I used permatex gasket sealer over a year ago. No leaks. Yamabond also works great. You can get that at motorcycle shops. That's what's used in snowmobiles and motorcycles to seal aluminum crankcases without a gasket. Good stuff.

permatex is what's used to seal your oil pan...get the black ****...i have no worries that it wouldn't do what you ask of it, it's not like the pan is pressurized, and the npt fitting should already be tight to begin with.

The only silicone that is rated for use with petrochemical substances (i.e.-oil) is FLOUROsilicone. So says the people at Hose Techniques who I'm pretty willing to believe.

uh dude did you ever wonder what the composition of permatex black is? Prematex is just a brand name, one of the bigger ones in this country i might add. The black is rated for high vibration/laod, and oil/water contact no it would not likely hold up to gasoline and definitly not to methanol it will hold oil just fine. You ever see what happens to a plane 2 liter with oil in it vs a 2 liter with gasoline in it. The one with gasoline will break down pretty quickly trust me not all petrochemicals are created equal, nor do they have the same propertys.

On every turbo system I do, I use teflon paste/thread sealant on all the NPT fittings. No leaks or seepage. You ever see a pipe fitter use JB Weld?
