Default Timing for Greddy kit.

Hello everyone, for running a base greddy kit would you recommend retarding the timing? Or is stock timing suitable? Just to get the car running I am running a flying miata single outlet exhaust and a boss frog test pipe both 2.5 in. Will this pose any problems of detonation with the stock timing? Also I am going to run a manual boost controller to hopefully prevent any spiking or creeping. Keep in mind I plan on only running 5 psi while the car is in this state. I will only be runnning the car like this for a week or two. Then I am going to IC asap, if Jim B doesnt get back to me in time I am going to fab one. After the initial install, follwed by IC and BOV I am going to set another day of installs for injectors, fpr, fuel pump, downpipe, some sort of fuel management either link, possibly emanage ultimate or link piggy back not sure yet. Turn the boost up to 10-12 psi and go dyno and tune. Thanks everyone in advance for your inputs.

To answer your question:

Without any boost retard system you have to follow the Greddy instructions. Set your base to 6 degrees. This will make your car very sluggish off boost. Your exhaust flows more than stock which makes this setting more important since you will develop boost sooner than same car with a stock exhaust. You will not see surges with the diaphram boost control the Greddy comes with.. however you will see slower boost build with it and thats where spending $7.00 to build a manual boost controller pays off. Instead of your boost slowly opening the wastegate you will go right to 5 psi and then the gate will open.. however you can see a surge with a MBC so I have heard.

Bottom line; make your plan now.. if u plan to see 12 psi then you will need fuel management like emanage in my opinion. I wish I knew where I wanted to be before I bought a Bipes and J&S safeguard. I wish I had just gone with emanage or megasquirt. But looking back is a waste of time.

Other opinions will undoubtedly follow soon ..

also... this answer could have been found pretty easy with a search.

Thanks for your input. I have a pretty set plan right now. This is my second turbo setup that I am going into. 2 years ago I did a greddy turbo gsr swapped civic. The only thing was I didnt do that much of the install work. This time around I am doing everything myself. I am probably going to purchase the link standalone. There is a tuning class that comes to my state every 6 months or so and I plan on attending the next session, and hopefully eventually be able to tune my own car. The only reason I am running the car like this is because I do not want to have much down time. It is my daily driver and I refuse to daily my NB while I am doing this. So i figure one weekend to get the car boosting and be safe for a week or two while the rest of my parts come in and then take another weekend out to do all the fuel upgrades and management.

6* - install that fpr first.

Jim won't get back to you. Stripes is making a better solution.

Install the FMU before running into boost or you wont have enough fuel.

I don't know why he said fpr.. I think he meant fmu... Just follow the Greddy instructions perfectly until you make fuel or ignition timing modifications.. bottim line: you should consider spending about 6 hours reading this forum and others if you dont know what to do next.

It should be noted that the same item is known by many names:

Fuel Management Unit

Auxilliary Fuel Pressure Regulator

Vortech

Begi

And some call it simply Fuel Pressure Regulator if they have removed their OEM FPR and have replaced it with one of those new-fangled ones that do everything.

With 93 octane, non-intercooled, running ~6psi with 10° timing, my car would ping pretty good at torque-peak.

Originally, the only mods were an HKS exhaust and metal intake. No Bipes. I've added a **** Intercooler Kit since.
