Just FYI about 95 percent of people who boost their miatas drill their oil pans with it still in the car. Both FM and Begi reccomend this method.

Yea i know i messed up, i was stupid not checking the gauges right away. I have picked up a spare motor last night a local went into a truck and began his parting. Motor only had 51k mine had 229K. I had ordered a spare oil pan and oil pick up tube, im gonna pull the existing motor out and swap parts over and start it up again hopefully not toast.

My personal preference is to make sure there are no metal shavings left in the oil pan. The only way to know for sure, is to do it the right way. REMOVE THE FREAKING PAN to tap it.

Oh yeah, removing the pan also keeps you from drilling into things that are best left intact.

It is cheap insurance to do things the right way the first time. Of course that's just my opinion.

I had the luxury of already having the engine out when I decided to drill and tap it, and I have to say after seeing all the shavings it created, and how difficult it was the clean it out (shavings stick to the smallest amount of oil), I wouldn't ever do it while in the car either.

Maybe your engine died as a direst result of the atrocious hack-job you do to the English language. I am honestly very afriad for an persons you have direct contact with or any information you have to relay to someone else. I know you're going to come back with the "I only type like this on the internet"...but I'm going to call bullshit. You see, anyone who takes any kind of pride in their work, will allow their work habits to flow into their daily routine. Typing/writing isn't like going to work in a suit and coming home and tossing on a stained wife-beater and your favorite jean shorts....no one gets off work and their usage of the English language goes from "professional" to "idiot". I relish when I get to sit here and type because it keeps me from getting lazy (though my proof-reading skills need some sharpening..or the keyboard I have at work is all wrong ).

Yes, jumping off a bridge is comparable to doing something that has been proven to be safe over and over again. Its not like you could screw anything else up by removing your engine. If you can not safely drill and tap an oil pan while it is in your car, you should not be removing and partially disassembling an engine.

I can't do it safely, not to my standards of safety, which is to know without a doubt there are no shavings left in the pan.

By the way, have you checked out my build thread? According to you, since I can't safely drill and tap my oil pan while it is in the car, I have no business pulling engines.....Think again.


Yep your right. I tell you what, we can just agree to disagree on this one.

Intentionally introducing metal shavings into the oil pan, then not visually inspecting the pan to make sure all shavings are gone, is the wrong way to do it, PERIOD.

I don't care that it has been done safely, I don't care that two different kit manufactures, suggest doing this, it is not the best way to do it. Can you get away with it? Yes. Are you taking a chance doing it this way? Yes.

Pulling the engine is cheap insurance, and ensures that you are not leaving any foreign material in the pan. When you tap any metal, you create shavings, some of the shavings are large enough to get trapped by the strainer in the pickup.. SOME ARE NOT. But hey its your engine, so tap away.

I wonder what side an engine builder for any race team would choose. I think I"m right, I know you are wrong....Of course that is my opinion, so

I agree with hingstonwm. I am doing it this week, pulling the pan. tap it and be 100% sure no metal shavings in my pan. I sound like my Mom right now but, better safe then sorry.

Good news motor isnt damaged, I had pulled motor out and replaced pickup tube. After much cleaning of shaving left over in the pan, placed motor back in i have oil pressure now. Haven't had the pleasure to enjoy boost yet, but few rev were delightful.

Did you flush the pan out like the others had suggested, or did you know that you were going to be pulling the engine so you didn't bother trying to flush out all the shavings.

Either way you can see why I say you need to pull the pan when you do this kind of work..
