Good day fagatron.

Edit: Upon further investigation, the only cool thing on your car is a megasquirt. Maybe you should lose your little m45 blower and trade it for an electric hand dryer that is available at any public restroom that tree huggers frequent. Not only do they have better thermal efficiency, they sound better and create more boost too. Paper towels are a far superior medium for drying hands... douchebags. Not to mention, a queef from your mom creates more airflow. So to summarize what I just said. Grow a pair, get a turbo, don't make fun of people who are cooler than you, and post nudes of your Mom, Sister, and GF. Kthanxbai.

Yah dude this is a little excessive-- to pull your engine to tap the oil pan. I mean, tapping it kind of sucks and it's awkward as hell (especially on my year :() but **** to pull the engine just for that is dumb.

OK so when I tapped my pan I used a ******* hand drill. It was actually out of necessity because I couldn't find any damn electric drill at the hardware store that had could swallow a 3/4" bit.

So there's the solution. Use a hand drill and you will get nice big shavings. Nothing super small that will make your engine explode.

Are you happy? You now never have to take out your engine to tap an oil pan again.

No if one little grain of metal is in there, it will ignite the red matter and the planet vulcan will be destroyed.

So says you. Not pulling your engine to tap your oil pan is just being lazy and is asking for trouble. I don't care if it is what most do. A few hours of labor is cheap insurance in my opinion. I pulled my engine, are you calling me dumb? Plain and simple you can not guarantee that the oil pan will be metal free unless you pull the pan. Check that last statement, if you had a borescope you could inspect the pan after taping.

Of course who gives a f**k if you blow up a $400.00 engine. That is the only reason I could see for not pulling the engine, miata engines are cheap and easy to come by. Let me ask a question, if the engine in question were more expensive and much harder to come by would you still take the lazy way out??

It's cool we'll just agree to disagree.

What the heck does this mean?

There are right and wrong ways to do things. Usually, the right way takes more time and effort, and leaves nothing to chance. While the wrong way, that is the lazy way, is faster, takes less effort, and hopes that lady luck is smiling on your work. Oh yeah, it also leaves those that you show your handy work too, looking at each other with that what the f**k was he thinking expression on there face.
Case in point this should look familiar to you.

Nice fix, I especially like the way you blended the patch into the entire cut.

My point is, nothing worth while is easy, and in my opinion, attention to detail is everything. I've seen the hack job you did on your frame fitting your system, and the weak *** effort made at patching it back together. Thankfully you are not building my project.
To the OP, sorry for the thread hijack, but if someone is an *** to me I don't put my head in the sand and pretend it didn't happen. Unless it's my boss

So if I had taken the engine out, I guess the frame rail weld would not have gotten shavings into the oil then?

OK I just saw that you are mr. F20c miata. When I read that I understand your thinking. The thing is though, not everyone has 1) even pulled an engine before (experience), 2) has your level of skills.

Seriously, I think you're setting the bar a little high. If you read my build thread, then you would have seen that the turbo kit install was the second time I had turned a wrench on any car- ever. And it was my daily driver. So I tapped the pan with the engine in the car and sawzalled my frame rail to shreds and my **** worked just fine for two years and 30,000 miles so f u. I'll guess you've pulled engines dozens of times so it's nothing intimidating to you.

But if you really are so experienced, why are you so adamant that a straightforward procedure with failsafes (pickup, filter) and due diligence (mineral spirits, oil dump) will destroy your engine? Is it really necessary in your opinion for all turbo installers to pull the pan? Blah blha blah.

LOL at nylon hose knitting. I think someone is being a little crazy about their engine. Which is good I guess, He is the kind of guy you want to buy an engine from. I have removed the engine once or twice in mine, and a couple other miatas. It isn't a big deal. However, I don't think an engine altering hunk of metal is going to be left in there. That being said when i did it, i used a gallon of mineral spirits and had the car at varying angles. Then i washed the mineral spirits out with oil. Because I don't want mineral spirits with the oil. Even though i dont think i got that much metal in there anyways. So i think we have come to the assumption that it would be a waste of time to pull a miata engine to tap the pan.

Removed my last reply. I realize there is no way we will ever agree on this.

So much butthurt over a drillled hole. No one is saying that your way is incorrect. What he is trying to say is that is like respraying your new car after getting one little scratch in the parking lot.

Mr Cool
1) I have won every mustache growing contest I have entered since I joined the Air Force, including mustache march. The most esteemed mustache growing competition.

2) It isn't a hand bag. I carry a ***** launching Javelin missile system. Your mom enjoys this.

3) Being from New Zealand, or New England, or New guinea or where ever, where English is the main language, you sure do butcher the hell out of it. Those red dots mean you spelled something incorrectly.

4) You are a complete failure at miataturbo.net. Perhaps miata.net or clubfagster.net can provide you with a plethora of technical and correct information you actually need from people that know what they are doing, and embrace your douchy comments with open arms, slammed suspension, zero offset wheels, and E-cool with powercards.

I get what he is trying to say, But a paint scratch is hardly on par with what is being discussed. The one question I have brought up a couple of different times has not been addressed. That is, if you were dealing with a much more expensive, lets say Oh I don't know, an engine that was 5k to replace. Would you still take the short cut and tap the pan in the car, or would you pull it in order to ensure that the pan was debris free? The point is that it is just not a good idea to run around with crap in the oil pan, even if there is a strainer on the pump and a filter in the system.

I really don't get why the majority here think I am nuts to take the time to pull the engine for this step. To me it is common sense, to ensure the pan is clean, and that flushing won't ensure....we have been down this bumpy road 100X already no sense in beating a dead horse.

Another option that has not been discussed is suspending the engine, dropping the k-member then dropping the pan. I replaced an oil pan and a k-member on a friends car this way once. It was quick off but a little tricky to line back up.
