Default 2006 Audi A4 2.0T I/C What do you think? (pixs)

Guys,

So I have this I/C laying around, (got it for free from work) I think that the core is bigger than the Saab I/C that a lot of guys use...

Just wondering if it would be worth using this one or maybe going the Stripes route....

I have the base Greddy but plan on getting full exhaust and I/C before installing it on the car.

Here are the specs on it.

http://www.flickr.com/photos/7675115@N03/

core is
9 1/2 wide
8 1/2 tall
2 3/4 deep

12" across at the bottom
15" across at the top

There is a small dent on it but i dont think it would affect performance at all

You think it would be decent on a Greddied car?

Thanks

Personally, In think it'd be a great way to get a cheap, decent intercooler in there to start with for low boost. Looks like it's be easiest to route piping over or under the radiator for that one, and not around.

Thanks

i meant to double check the internal flow of the intercooler....

Corky reccomends 6-7 sq. in. of internal flow. for every 100HP.

how tall are the runners? 1/8" 1/4"??
legnth of runner x height of runner x # of runners / width of runner

9.5 x .25 x 14 = 33.25 / 2.75 = 12.09 / 6 x 100 = 201.5HP * .83 = 166rwhp
i think it should suffice.... but compare it to my $80 cooler: 11 x .25 x 16 = 44 / 3 = 14.66 / 6 * 100 = 244HP * .83 = 203rwhp

the amount of tubes "runners" the intercooler has....from your pics i count 14 (they need to be the ones that the charge actually passes through). But i need to know how big each one is. I have 9.5" x 2.75" but I'm not exactly sure how tall they are.... most likely 1/4"

anywhos, it's just an idea of where you wanna be size wise....it'll work...but something a tad bigger might work better....

I believe Corky's new edition of Maximum Boost will have a completely revamped intercooler chapter, so we'll see what he says when that's released.

all my friends drive vw's and they are running like 16psi on those intercoolers. I am sure you will be fine.

Hey guys,

Sorry to bring back this old post, but I am finally taking the car off the road and going to start the turbo install.

I am debating whether to use this Audi I/C or pick up a cheap one from Ebay.

I am probably going to try for around 200hp on this car.

I have some IC piping that is 2.5"

Do you guys think this I/C will be ok or can someone point me to a properly sized one on ebay?

Thanks

First off, that's not a 2006 Audi A4 2.0T intercooler. It looks like an intercooler for one of the older 1.8Ts.

Secondly, there are far better intercoolers to use for reasonable prices, such as this one: http://www.cxracing.com/mm5/merchant...ry_Code=IC30CO

How would you know? Can you read the part number?
I can tell you 100% that this I/C came from an '06 Audi A4.
I am a collision estimator and did the estimate on that car myself.
It is very possible that the Jetta and A4 share the same parts...

Anyway, thanks for that link I will probably go with one of these since it looks better too!

Is this the size and style that most guys are using?

Anyone have any pixs of this one installed?

Thanks again.

I can't find a single picture of the A4 2.0T intercooler on the internetz...ridiculous. Anyway, yes, it's entirely plausible that they'd have a different intercooler on the A4, longitudinally-mounted 2.0T, then they would the VW/A3, transversely-mounted 2.0Ts, but I would think they'd use the same basic intercooler with slightly different placement/angles of the inlet/outlets.

Here's a pic of the transverse 2.0T intercooler:

Large in front area, thin, and it's sandwiched between the a/c condenser in front and the radiator behind it.

Just seems strange that in a car that uses the same basic chassis, an identical engine, and, likely, identical radiator and a/c condenser, but a different engine orientation, that they'd use such a drastically different intercooler. I'll keep looking for pics

Hey, Blue, I finally came across some Audi tech document referencing two side-mounted intercoolers vs. the single, front-mount on the transverse-application cars. My apologies. I forgot that the latest, B7 A4 used the 1.8T in the beginning of its run, which probably would explain part of the reasoning behind continuing to use the SMICs with its current 2.0T.

Oddly, or perhaps because of that, there seems to be very few upgrade paths from the stock SMIC setup on the longitudinal cars. FYI, the 2.0T in stock form pushes about 11.5-12 PSI which translates to ~200hp at the crank. I would think that one of these intercoolers would be alright for a low-boost Miata to start.

Problem is, it'll likely then end up forcing you to do a bunch of work all over again when you swap it out for something bigger down the road. But if you're getting it for next to nothing...

Hey Brian,

No problem man, I just thought it was funny since this I/C was taken right off the car and I took it home. You are probably right though, the 2.0T probably has an I/C on either side, I can't remember on that car though...

Yeah, there is a big difference in those I/C's thats for sure.
