Default What is a broken wastegate?

What will a broken wastegate do? Would it cause oil to go into the intake pipes?

New motor on way but is the turbo ok.

Are you talking about an internal wastegate? Do you mean the actual wastegate, or the actuator.... Well it really doesn't matter I guess. None of those going bad would cause an oil leak. They would cause a boost leak or lack of boost though. Bad oil seals make oil leak.

Well, a wastegate that breaks shut (arm no longer allows gate to open) will cause boost to skyrocket.

Seems to me that most of the time, they'd break in a way that would cause boost target to not be hit, underboost.

My car has had engine trouble and was parked for 6 months. I drove it down to Crazyred in Sacramento (90 miles). Keep in mind that the car has not been down the road for a while, it burns oil and fires flames. I noticed some oil leaking out of the intake pipes after the intercooler and I wanted to track down the leak.

is your breather line routed into the intake pipe? That might cause that.

Yes the vent line goes right into the intake plumbing just like the stock kit.
I have an aftermarket GTX valve, I dont think it is as good as the mazda part.

You have two options, get or build a oil catchcan, or put a small filter on the crankcase breather. Either way, clean out that oil mess, do one of those, then see if oil still get into your IC piping. If so then your turbo seals are bad and you need a turbo rebuild which you can do yourself with an $80 complete rebuild kit. If oil is no longer a problem then you know it was coming from the crank breather and a catchcan will solve that problem. It's good to route vacuum to the crankcase, it relieves pressure in the motor allowing oil to drain more freely into the oil pan.

i'd say the turbo needs a rebuild regardless. flames mean super rich as well. what are you doing for fuel? bad o2 sensor maybe?

Yeah i thought when the wastegate was broken you spooled to infinity and beyond depending on how it breaks of course. My local turbo shop told me it's common to see semi trucks overboost up to 70psi. Think the 1.8 rods could handle that?

It depends on how it breaks. If the wastegate door got frozen/stuck shut somehow, yes, you'd boost to infinity and your engine would go boom, if you weren't paying any attention whatsoever.

But with all the pressure against that little flapper, I find that an extremely unlikely failure mode.
