Default Good luck @ RA

Good luck to everyone competing at Road Atlanta.

In the spirit of this thread, am I right in saying that 99 miata is the best baseline for TTE/PTE? Not trying to steal any setup ideas, but what is the next step - dyno reclass or point mods? Let's assume the goal is fastest lap at Road Atlanta.

FYI, if you are interested I have run fastest of 1:50.8 with my 95 Miata with street tuned MS, bolt on exhaust and air intake, coilovers and bfg r1 tires. I would like to get into Time trials with nasa so any car setup information would be helpful to satiate my curiosity.

Since I am dyno reclassed the point modification for routing an air filter near an inlet which is +1, is null and void.
Must be a change for 2014. I'm 99% sure that the 2013 rules only allowed air filter holes, not cooling holes. Regardless, the additional holes don't make the car faster and they open you up for scrutiny (i.e. you have to prove they don't improve aero, and I could very easily argue that they might/do). I would get rid of them.

I race a 90 Miata. Pte class

I've been through 1.6 point index and 1.8 swap dyno reclass. In retrospect I wish I kept my 1.6 point index so I can move points around by changing modifications to see what works best. My reclass allows only tires, springs, shocks and diff. With 140hp@2425lbs.

With this pte set up I've ran road Atlanta at 1:44.6. This was competing against no one in a NASA SE event.

I know I can't prove they don't provide some sort of aero dynamic benefit. The obviousness of the modification is for cooling, I would argue my purpose. I dropped 10-15 degrees on a hot day at vir, I have my telemetry to prove it.
Also, what aero dynamic benefit would drilling holes in a front bumper provide? Holes in the rear bumper is a diffuser, but front seems like more resistance by reducing flat surfaces

I think a points classed '99 is the strongest PTE Miata.

I run 1.47.x on 205 NT-01s on a 99 with the mods in my sig. PTE regionally runs in 1.44.x to 1.43.x depending on who shows up. Spec miata runs 1.44.x with the one exception some years back that ran 1.42s I don't know how that is/was possible. Might be different tires, as I think SCCA and NASA have different tire sponsors for SM.

TTE ran high 1.48-1.50 last time I was there. Obviously, TTE is ripe for the pickins since they are not running particularly competitive times. TTD ran 1.45.x, so there is definitely room to push both groups.

Another thing, TTE guys usually try to fit A6s in their points vs. PT running the R6 or whatever equivalent is available. So keep in mind that your points might be allocated differently than the predominant PT discussion here.

As for nationals, wait a bit and find out .

We need a 2014 NASA eastern championships thread. I'm eager to see how my friends and customers are doing.

I'd agree. Looks like the tires were killing you in T5, 6 and 7. Can't throttle-lift up hills w/o paying for it. I assume you're on throttle through those turns with same entry speeds on good tires. That alone would make a big difference. Thoughts are more speed through T1 as it looks like you have more room to track out? I'm guessing it is getting back over for the T3 braking zone?

Nice drive- video shows a winning package IMO- car and driver.

RE the discussion about the 2001 chassis not being competitive. Is your dyno classing just really bad or is the penalty to 2001+ dyno classed cars not existent? I know for a points car they have some problems.

I got 138whp@2390 from Greg which gives me a 5oz advantage!

Based on that it looks like Greg may treat all dyno classed Miatas the same. I figured he would give NBs some extra weight.

if you check the PT auto-dyno reclass section at the end, you will see that the 7* penalty is removed for dyno reclassed 01+. the weight difference is a meager 10-20 lbs compared to the 7*.

Great driving guys, I wish I was there on track with you all. Next year will be at VIR, and that good sirs, is my home track
All my questionable mods will be undone as to not have some one try and take a potential win from me

Proposed 2015 Tire Rules.
nasaforums.com • View topic - 2015 Proposed Tire Rules (TTB-TTF)

Sticky tires much higher points.
R6, R7, SM7 same as R6 was.
RR now 2 points less.

Could that make a points based TTE Miata on RRs with an aftermarked ECU and a big front bar possible?

Is the R7 appreciably better than the R6? If so how can they be the same points?

Nice to see the BFG penalty reduced but jeez if they aren't basically forcing people to run R7s. 22pts for A7 means no autocross tires for you!

Could that make a points based 1.6 on RR competitive in E? Base weight of 2182... I don't even know if I can achieve that, I might have to quit bodybuilding.

If you guys think a sub-2600lb car will ever be competitive in E again, you learned nothing from RA.

Well, that's certainly true at high-speed tracks. I think at a smaller, twisty track, Eric, Chris, and I would have been all over the RX7.

Really the issue comes down to the way the rules are written. Heavy cars don't corner as well as light ones, and to correct for the lap time difference, they get a modifier on their class weightower ratio, to allow them more power. While this makes the lap time equal, it makes heavy cars achieve their lap time differently than small cars - in the straight vs in the corner. This also means that heavy cars benefit at tracks with a lot of straight, vise versa at tracks with a lot of corners.

Jason thats true. But IMO its still a bit biased towards the heavier car if driven and setup well.
This new proposed limit of only getting 7 points back for tire size is yet another jab to miatas running anything other than PTE. we lose 3 points...
