Default Ebay wings (flame suit on)

Ok... so just out of curiosity lets say I didn't have $600 to spend on an APR wing and instead bought this.

http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/59-IN...item3a66916fad

I have access to a waterjet so making my own uprights or spacers is easy. Would you make fun of me?

The way I look at it, a wing is a wing. For $230 I might just be a guinea pig and buy one...

There is a whack load on egay ranging from 55' wide to 61' wide.

I have one. It's probably not worth it if you're in NASA time trials. (Points) and if you don't run a splitter up front and track your car, then your a ricer and deserve to be tag teamed by dom and Brian in your cell.

I've been wondering the same thing for a while now. Do knock-offs look the same if you eyeball it or are they really the same measurements and angles?

A thread on this topic:

http://www.timeattackforums.com/foru...-spoilers.html

Notice that an APR gtc-200 is $650-ish, and the new FRP version emilio just rolled out is only $500.
On that forum, a "budget" wing IS a $600-$700 wing, so $500 sounds pretty good. In that thread, they point out two things:

1. The wing sees severe forces. Even if you fab your own struts and mounts, the mounting points for the struts are probably glassed into the wing, and so you're therefore depending on the mounts in the wing to be able to handle the forces. Depending on a certain amount of downforce going into a corner and it suddenly not being there because the wing ripped off the mounts is not an experience you want to have.

2. The wrong wing is going to make drag. The right will make drag. Only the right wing will also create downforce. Might as well get the downforce you're paying for with the drag.

Like one guy in that thread, if you were looking at getting a $100 wing to mess around with and try out, maybe that's worth it, because if it turns out to just be trash, you're only in it a small amount. For $300, you're in it too much to be willing to toss it out if it's not good enough, plus the need to fab your own stuff for it, you're close enough to the cost of the FRP APR one, AND that one is already miata-specific...

that's all just my $0.02 though.

Exactly. We got a GTC200 cheap from another guy for another Miata last year but had to have someone else fab mounts. Turned out wrong, needed to redo, etc. Short story: the new Supermiata wing is unbeatable in price for a Miata.

yeah, the only reason i have one is because it was free. my buddies dad's shop provided the scrap aluminum free, i designed and cut the pieces, then another buddy (a master welded in aluminum tig welding) welded it up for me. it def. made a difference, helped balance out my front splitter, but it wouldn't have been worth it if i had to pay for the wing and someone to fab up the mounts.

i like the depth (i think its called chord length) 12" measured from frt. of wing to rear. i don't like the integrated end plates though.

Wellll.... you could drill holes through those endplates, fab up whatever size endplates you want, and just bolt the bigger ones to the existing ones. Would be effective..

A local guy had an eBay wing he bolted onto the back of his Miata. It worked great! Until both supports folded in a third gear slalom at an autocross. Basically the car went right and the wing followed...a couple tenths later.

Sometimes it's worth paying more.
