The only S2K I have driven felt very crude and I didn't really like it. The transmission felt like garbage and the engine noise (not exhaust) wasn't to my liking. For a while I was seriously considering an Elise for a track car, but they are still around 20k.

What about an E30?

+1 for the S2K, but more importantly, don't pretend you didn't read Savingtons post: Before you make it faster, budget for a rollbar, a proper racing seat and a 6-point harness. Then make a quick budget check on brake pads and some R-compounds, so that you can actually use the car during the session, instead of having a fast car in the garage that “only needs new brakes”. Then make it faster.

lol, I want to be able to drive to the track in comfort and I can't stress this enough it HAS to be 100% reliable no dicking around at the track. No track only cars. I'm also financing the 10k and dropping my spare cash on some quick mods. I need a new daily anyways since I got rid of the Genesis and G35 this summer. I took my wifes Civic Si to the track a couple of weekends ago and destroyed the front left Pilot and took 3 pads down to metal. I think at one point after a session they actually caught on fire. I think its going to be an S2000 so I can hang out with William and Emilio at S2ki, and build up a TTB car. Lets see how long it takes William to figure out who I am...lol No more pos junkers that break down, I need track time and lots of it. Plus I want to go flat out.

IMHO, taking a car that you don’t even own (just borrowed from the bank) to the track is mixing up “I want” with common sense. There is a loooong list of stuff completely out of your control that can happen on a race track. Just a simple flat tire in the wrong corner can mean you write of your car, not to mention all the other guy running on thrack with you. Don’t track a car that you can’t afford to lose. If you can’t pay for it, you can’t afford to lose it. No offense, I just really think you are taking a big financial risk if you track your DD that you havn't even paid for.

Get a cheap E30. Strip it, cage it, track it. Use the “nice” car on the street. Just my 0.02.

Uhhhhh...... not biased or anything, but how how about a rotrex NA miata with a trailer to tow your r-comps. You could have a very nice setup for ~$13k.

Me and my dad are planning on doing the streetable track car with my 97, putting a hitch on it to tote the tires to tracks and auto-x events. We'll dump money into suspension and then eventually will want more power and the rotrex setups have been proven to be pretty damn reliable.

There is a Socal track junkie who goes by the name of Richard EVO on TrackHQ, Miata.net, etc. He's jumped from an Evo to a Miata to a C4 Vette and finally settled on a bone stock S2k. The only things he's done are AP2 wheels, NT-01s, Carbotechs, a rollbar, halo seat, 6-point belts, and a fire bottle. He is very quick, I bet he does 25+ events a year, and he drives the car to and from the track.

So to reiterate: Buy an S2k, but spend your "mod money" on safety gear, seriously.

Lots of folks will tell you that tracking a car that's not paid for is stupid, but you're a big boy and you can accept responsibility for your decisions. If you can accept the idea of making payments on a memory, and you can still get to work Monday after wrecking the car on Sunday, then you know what's up.

Wrecks are one of the many reasons I'd rather track a Miata vs. an S2k, though. It's a lot cheaper to repair/replace a bent Miata than it is to repair/replace a bent S2k.

+1 on the S2K. I know a lot of guy's who have them and track them. Just take some of that "mod" money and set it aside for anything that would possibly break. Then if and when the time comes you'll have the cash to fix it up. You'll still have a few g's to spend on the safety equipment too. Just my .02

I have a rotrex miata. A spec miata and a S2000. S2000 is my DD (along with a Prius).

S2000 on street tire is as fast as my spec miata on r.comp. I don't have any safety equipment on my S2000, so I only take it on certain tracks where roll is rare. but I still don't push it as much as I should, because of missing safety equipment. but I can say I fell safer in a stock S2000 than a stock Miata with roll bar. Miata's A-frame is made of corrugated plastic, whereas S2000 a-frame is made of metal.

Only weakness on a track s2000 is cracked rotors. If u r on street tires, bearing will be fine. additional mods - BSK kit on an AP1 to fix the snap oversteer. A small wing also help a ton. And camber kit, s2000 likes at least -2 degree. If u have ap1, u will need bigger wheel. Emilio sells 9" front and 10" rear. 255 front and 275 rear. That's at least 2 seconds below SM record. 1:57s at TWS on street tires.

I don't like e30, 240 and few others. They are just too slow in an advanced group no matter how good a driver u are.

sweet baby j! he didn't ask for your approval of his financial situation, just cuz you can't do it doesn't mean he can't. it's not his only car, and if he did wreck it, we could strip any good parts and buy a stolen recovery shell from houston or san antonio cheap enough. and stop with the miata's, he's had a half dozen of them including tracking a msm and a spec miata.
