Anyone have experience putting a Recaro Pro Racer Hans in a miata? I remember a guy posting pictures of them in his car a few years ago, but the website is no longer active (specthismiata.com). I've gone through a few miata-friendly seats now and I'm tall enough that none of them have worked with my head and neck restraint. I'm thinking pretty hard about just ponying up the cash and going back to a Recaro Pro Racer like I had in my old E30, which worked with my head and neck restraint, but I'd like some sort of confirmation that I'm not gonna have to hack up my interior first.

The Good: Quality of brackets seem to be top notch. They are extremely well thought out. Nice hardware included. Lots of adjustment possibility. I have mine adjusted all the way back, and it it perfect.
The Bad: 1. Taller guys may not feel like it goes back far enough. Honestly though. I probably have mine set back too far, but it's predominately DD so I went for comfort. 2. This is probably the bigger issue. The Buddy Clubs were wide enough that they required the brackets be flipped so that the mounting bolt is on the inner side of the bracket instead of the outside. So the seat can't go lower than the top pf the bolts. This lost me at least 1" of height adjustment, so my thighs barely clear the steering wheel with the seat pads in place. Actually driving may prove that the pads have to be removed.
All in all it's not bad considering only slight hammering to one spot on the tunnel to get the bracket in place. There are ways to modify the floor to get lower, but I didn't want to do this. There is amounting point for the crotch part of the harness, and numerous adjustments to angle the seat. I could probably angle the seat down more to get more clearance for my thighs.
FYI: Get a set of F***ing ratchet wrenches for installing bolts into seats. I could have probably shaved half the time or more.

Round and Round I go with race seats. In talking to Moti of BBfab he suggested a FIA homologated fiberglass shell seat. I went down to subesports.com since they are local and tried out some seats.
I had honestly planned on getting something cheap like momo starts but all the cheap ---- at subesports was un-comfortable as hell. The only two seats I felt were worth a damn were the Cobra Imola and the Cobra Suzuka.
Any one have experience mounting these? Any one have any opinion one what brackets I should use? Cobra sells some and they look nice but are god aweful expensive and have a sort of triangle shape to them... Two last questions... for mounting the side mount brackets to the floor... what length and diameter Grade 8 bolts are people using? Also does the NB driver side seat belt receiver work for bolting to the trans tunnel or should I find an earlier model one with a longer "pigtail'.

I don't have any experience with those seats or the mounts (perhaps pictures would help).
I used the two stock bolts on the front of the seat, then I picked up some comparable 14mm bolts to use to mount in the floor. I think a 14mm is usually a M10.
There is a pretty good seat thread that might have your seat in it (I remember a few cobra installs on there) on miata.net. Search (in google):

and it should pop up.

They are a touch shorter and don't quite have as many holes for mounting (I'll prob drill one to get as low as possible). My concern was that little jog in teh vertical section of the bracket. I'm guess that one that is just a standard L shape would be easier to mount but possibly more prone to deform in an impact event?
I scoped that miata.net thread and there is indeed ample good info available there however not much info on the hardware actually used. I guess maybe the best thing to do is just get the seat in place with off the shelf hardware from a hardware store and then order up replacements in grade 8 hardware.

Yea I definitely would not use that bracket. thats going to force you out further from the trans tunnel and 100% will not allow you to center the seat (or even get it close).
I would stay away from that, perhaps you can find another manufacturer's side mount that fits the cobra you want.
I found plenty of grade 8 hardware at Ace hardware (and class 10.9 too!). Just try to stick with metric that way any adjustments or movements of the seat won't require 3 different wrenches/sockets.
I picked up a bolt, two washers and a lock flange nut for each leg. I also bought some cheap hot rolled steel then cut it to 6"x4" and painted it (rust) for the seat backing plates. I assume you plan to cut the rear hump (I suggest it for clearance and low).
I would stay away from that, perhaps you can find another manufacturer's side mount that fits the cobra you want.

The Cobra shouldn't be that different than most of the fiberglass backed seats out there. I was under the impression that the front-back spacing on most of the FIA/SFI seats are pretty close. Off to do some more research! I am for sure going to start looking for new brackets, I know that much.

I have a Cobra Imola 2 for my passenger seat. I used steel OMP brackets to mount it: https://www.pegasusautoracing.com/pr...asp?RecID=9188
It was really easy to mount but it's the only seat I've had on the passenger side. I have a Momo Cup VTR on the driver's side and it took a lot more work.

which ones? I think some people will tell you to stay away from the aluminum seats that have the flared sides that can hit your ribs. I don't have any experience with that, but I think thats more of a concern on non-caged cars. especially if you are on the street.
