The only downside on the truck is in the mountain passes it kicks down a gear and on the extreme grades, I'm down two gears and flatout at ~50mph. What does a 'big block' 6 cylinder gas engine need to make more torques? TURBO!
I've seriously thought about it. Ford put the TD04 transmission in diesels too so there is no concern with power capacity there and the turbo should actually help the pumping loss on the flats and balance out the fuel that would be turned to 70mph on the big hills. With this displacement and how I use it (95% towing), I could put on a massive turbo with zero concern for lag. 6 or 7 psi would be plenty.

I'm cheap and on a budget but this is the best $1,900 tow combo out there. 1991 F-150 with a 300/6 for $1,200 and a $700 tandem 16' trailer for $700. I get 14 to 15mpg on 87 gas towing if I keep it under 65. The truck has twin fuel tanks which give a range of around 500 miles which is cool too.

You might improve the MPG by setting the wing some degrees negative, as per Emilio's high speed tests (helping the turbulence).
But an aerodynamic enclosed trailer would be even better (if it weighed close to nothing), or an aero designed tarp.
Not the smallest Photoshopped example though.
Interesting how many general "aero" designs still have pointy sleek fronts and steep rear ends...

I typically don't cruise at much over 70mph. Also in the rolling hills I will build up speed on the way down the hill so I don't have to use at much throttle/boost to make it up the next side. I really try to work on being smooth and deliberate with my throttle inputs as well.

I have an 04 Silverado standard cab long bed, 5.3L. Has plenty of power most of the time, and has gotten me up some STEEP hills in NC more than once. I have an extra set of leafs in there, and it pulls dead level. Couldn't do that before no matter where you loaded the car(s).
Trailer is a 16' Big Tex that I hate, because the ramps are too short and the fenders are too high to open a door. It does have brakes on both axles though, which is nice.
I do have to put the truck on a set of ramps to get the trailer low enough to drive on/off of with the Mazda. Drag car was hit or miss.
I did make the mistake of towing the RX7 with the COT wing on the back and no air dam (so the nose was open). Trailer was all over the place. Put the air dam back on the car, pulled straight as an arrow. Go figure!
I seem to always get caught in the rain, but it is cool watching that rooster tail come out from under the wing...
