Jackson Racing supercharger components?
I just bout a '91 engine and trans with a jackson racing mp45 supercharger on it. I am planning on swapping this engine into my 91. I have a few questions:
All I see is an afpr, the guy I bought it from handed me the stock ecu, and said there wasnt a bipes or whatnot included. Is it possible that the stock ecu was flashed or something? Anything else I should look for?
I have searched and found people mentioning a "power card" is that nessecary? I would rather just find a used megasquirt or link ecu if I were to spend any more money on bandaids.
Other than the afpr what else would I need to make this run?
Thanks in advance *flame suit on

Dont use the "afpr". The ECU isnt flashed, thats what he was using for fuel management, and its ****.
Youre number one priority should be to get that thing running on megasquirt with a set of larger injectors. If you buy used injectors make sure to get them tested and cleaned.

Yes, you just retard base timing quite a bit. From 10 to 6 or 8 degrees. Ruins your low end power, which is what a bipes does. Keeps stock timing below a certain RPM, then retards it at higher RPMs when you're boosted.
The stock ECU cannot be modified in any way shape or form*.
the AFPR will work, but a MS would be much better. Sell it and find even a first generation MSPNP for ~$300.
*apparently you can change crystals to increase your rev limit with unrepeatable results. So I don't really count that.

Thanks for the quick response! So just to verify, if I get a megasquirt, I can ditch the afpr and nothing else is needed? Is it a requirement to have a wideband with the MS? Would I be foolish to not get a boost gauge since we are only talking a few psi? Or is aboost gauge more just for monitoring and making sure all systems are working properly? I dont want to sink a ton of cash into it since I got the set-up so cheap and had actually wanted a turbo initially.

You will also need injectors like I said before.
A wideband would be advisable, but you dont have to have one. It depends on how much faith you want to put in your tuner.
I would get a cheap boost gauge mostly just to know when your belt starts slipping, which will happen.

I"m looking at a bipes or msd for timing control. I'll look at a ms system later. I'm just trying to get the sc on and running for next spring. Between the bipes or msd which would you recommend? Is there a knock sensor with either card? I realize this is an old post but I couldn't find a thread more appropriate

I don't have any experience with the msd box, but the bipes worked great for me when I had the jrsc on my 91. Neither of those units will come with a knock sensor. With the bipes you can set the amount of timing you want to pull, and when you want to pull it. It also has provisions for pulling timing related to your intake air temperatures. As mentioned, its older technology, but it will work ok until you are ready to build a better mousetrap.
FYI be careful when you 1st get everything set-up. I would highly reccomend a wideband and gauge like an lc1 (about 150 bucks, plus a bung welded into your header) to monitor your afrs. I didnt do this and it cost me a head gasket at the beginning. (wasn't a huge deal, but indeed a laborious pain in the ***)

I think that the Bipes is the way I'm going to go for timing if I can locate one. I've advertised on Pittsburg craigslist but no results so far. I have a JRSC older gen powercard that had the vacume tubing cut. Hopefully I can still use it. The only items I seem to be missing are an idle control valve and hose

The FIC-6 works pretty well for a base JRSC install. If you aren't running a boost upgrade, I would seriously consider installing the variable rate fuel pressure regulator that is with the JRSC and dialing the timing back to 8 deg (91 or better octane). This is a really simple set-up in this configuration that you can get comfortable with. Just make sure you properly set the boost pressure as outlined in the instructions for the JRSC. You can evolve beyond that at your own pace. This is how I started. I moved to the FIC, then I built a bunch of custom electronics to compensate for the FIC shortcomings, and now I am running MS.
