Default 6 speed bellhousing replaceable?

Hey guys,

While installing my 6 speed after being almost done I found that one of the mounting tabs for the slave cylinder was broken off during shipping. I noted the damaged box, took pictures of it, and the delivery driver also annotated it in his delivery notes, so if the seller insured the package like he should have we can probably get the insurance money... but my question is this, it looks like the 6 speed (unlike the 5 speed) has a separate bell housing. The broken off mounting tab is on the bell housing... how hard is it to change out the bell housing on a 6 speed?

I assume this is my only option for a repair. It is cast aluminum and the mounting tab was mangled as well as being broken off, so even if welding was an option I don't see it working out.

Thanks for any info,

Keith

I bet it could be welded, and pocket the insurance money for new clutch maybe?

I installed the new clutch and light weight flywheel when I pulled the 5 speed off

The broken off ear has been crushed to the point that the bolt hole is oval shaped with cracks in the threads on either side. No way this could be weld repaired without a donor transmission to cut the mounting point off of, cut the junk one off of the 6 speed, and weld in the donated mounting tab.

I fear that the best I can hope for is insurance re-imbursement and find a different 6 speed. Sort of wish the seller had insured it for more that I paid... but he is an honest guy so he insured it for what he charged me for it.

<edit> ****!!! I just read chicksdigmaitas thread on rebuilding a 6 speed and from the pics and description it is clear that the bellhousing is actually the front half of the case, I may be able to get a blown 6 speed with a good case, and have a transmission shop swap the gearset from this one into a good case. It would probably be cheaper to just get a different good 6 speed though, unless I could get the case for free.</edit>

I am just glad the guy I bought from is a stand up kind of guy... just wish he hadn't let UPS do the packaging for him

Keith

Good news!

BBundy is selling me a new front half of a case... so if I can swap it myself I will... if not at least I have the part to take to a transmission shop.

If you're interested, a friend of a friend here in Indy has done a tranny rebuild for a friend. I can try to get his info if you don't feel up to doing it yourself.

I was going to say, BBundy should have a million 6-speed parts for any one that's in need.

I have several cases with broken guts. I have actually been looking for a transmission with this sort of damage that I could buy cheap.

Should be able to just grab a piece of 3003 flat stock from home depot and drill and tap it, bolt it to a scrap salve cylinder, and bolt the slave cylinder to the bell housing in the correct spot, pre heat that bitch and weld it on.

So, dropped a shift lever bolt and I think it may have gone in the shifter hole... is the passage from the shifter hole to the case large enough for a shift lever bolt to fit through?

Keith

<edit> Nevermind, when I got off work today I was able to get a better angle with the light, and fished it out with my magnet after I could see where it was.</edit>
