Miata desperately needs a clutch. No money for a FM clutch.
Found some info on people using the 626/ford probe v6 clutch and pp on fwd bp cars. But no info for miatas.
It's a little bigger but same tooth count on the disc. Little more tq holding is all I need for now.

You seriously don't have 300 for an FM clutch?
Then get a replacement OE for 200
Or just a disk for 100

Or you can try to cheap out and possibly waste money and a ton of time trying to get a clutch no one has used before (or that's documented) to work on your car. Your choice.

If you just need a little more torque holding get an egay one. It will probably slip anyway but at least you know it fits.

atleast on the FWD BP flywheel the KL clutch fits.

KL Disc will work on a miata, if you use a miata throw out bearing. But not sure about the pressure plate, says he used the oem exedy pressure plate.

They do work on the FWD BP. TOB and all.

949 twin disc = $1030 + shipping. Available in dream world.
FM stage 1 = $350 + shipping
Exedy oe 1.8 = $112 shipped.
Exedy oe KL = $103 shipped ( $128 after miata TOB )

If I bought just the KL disc it should work fine. But I want a new pressure plate too.
Pretty sure my clutch is original from 1995. But, I still can't find if the pressure plate will work in a miata.
I may have to gamble on the pressure plate. If it works, great, if not, I use the disc and bearings, and reuse an old pressure plate.
If it just needs a little clearance I have a sawzall.

Have wrecked miata shell, spare motor, and trans sitting in my garage. So I can bench test everything before install.

So the KL disk is more grippy? Cause otherwise what's the point if you're gonna reuse the pressure plate?

Also based on what you posted there is no price difference?

KL clutch is a 8.875" disc vs. 8.5" on the bp. More surface area, on the outside edge. Was designed to hold the KL ~165ft.lbs.

Took a picture of the wasted space on a bp flywheel.


Edit: that flywheel is an F1, was used with that 6 puck f1 clutch. And I am not putting one on my cars. Organic for me.

Maybe I will see if someone has an old used KL clutch.... But I don't talk to anyone that drives FWD cars.

As common as this was on FWD cars I figured someone had to try it on a miata. Pressure plate and all.

There's a guy in the St Louis area on here that was doing a KL swap also, might try him. Better hurry though I bought his torsen because he decided he wanted 2 more cylinders so I'm not sure if he has anything left. His user name was turbotyla I think.

I do FWD KL things.

Don't really feel like digging out and shipping a spare clutch, though. I'd just do the job right the first time or go with an Egay clutch if you seriously can't come up with the money and this is your only way around town.

Ordered a KLZE clutch, $103 shipped.

Compared to a used F1 clutch, the KLZE disc and pressure plate fit the fidanza flywheel just fine.


The TOB is the problem. The opening on the KL pressure plate is wider, and the miata tob doesn't look like it would work, sits right on the edge of the teeth. The KL TOB was made for a wider fork but is identical height.

So I modded the fork a little. Removed less than 1/16" of metal from each side.
And then bent the tabs in on the KL TOB so it wouldn't come off. I may have to tweak them a little bit more. But, it works.

I'm pretty sure the throw out bearing that will work on a Miata transmission wont actuate a klv6 clutch due to the diameter differences of the bearing.

The KL TOB inner diameter is also larger, so I am trying to figure out a shim that will work.

If that doesn't pan out, will have to use a BP pressure plate and TOB.

KL disc is larger in diameter by a few tenths of an inch which results in a small increase in holding power. Something like 10-15%. It's also cheaper than a Miata disc IIRC. I wanted to try it but never had an application that would have been appropriate for the test. I was going to use an ACT organic KL disc and a Miata HD pressure plate.

I plan on making around 200hp. And the KL setup is supposed to make 170ft lbs of torque stock.

Could not figure out a resoanable way to get the KL throwout bearing to fit the bp trans without play. So I went and bought the BP Kit ( cheaper than just a new throwout bearing and pressure plate. )

So for reference.
Buy exedy part# KMZ03 ( BP complete clutch kit ) Was $106 shipped on amazon.
And find a MZD007S equivalent ( or MZD007US Both listed on the exedy box ) I can't find the exedy disc by itself, just in the Kit "07095" Clutch disc for a 2.5l v6 mazda, or ford probe gt.

I lost a few bucks experimenting, but oh well.
This setup could probably be had for $150 for the BP kit and a KL clutch disc, and I am out $200.
