Stock valving may not be a huge deal. I've been looking at this Shim Restackor program for a while, and it seems like it could be just what we need to make revalving a DIY thing. Total cost of a revalve should be like $20/corner as long as you stick with the stock piston.

Unfortunately I just can't bring myself to spend $75 on something with no guarantee that it's even relevant to my application. Perhaps some adventurous soul in this thread would like to pave the way for the rest of us?

Damn dude. You really do poor.

With the newer COB piston a DIY revalve would cost about the same as having it done professionally. That's a much harder sell. The kicker would be that all you need to change to get whatever valving you want after that is the oil, some seals and a few $1-2 shims.

Pretty sure this is true.
Sport = Showa
Hard Sport = Bilstein

This is the first I've ever heard of Mazda labeling any Miata suspension "normal."

Maybe you guys might know the answer to this. I'm trying to find the part number or size of the snap ring for the spring perch. The horrible pot holes in Chicago caused one to go flying off the rear on my car and so far searching isn't turning up any results on miata forums although I found 2 sizes on a corvette forum although i doubt either are correct for our car..

Bilstein uses a .059 thick snap ring.
Here are Bilstein's part numbers for the correct snap rings for the early factory Bilsteins.

46mm part number is 2522880 and the 36mm is 2522870

Measure the groove and cross reference snap rings for that groove size.

On my MSM Bilsteins this works;

https://www.rotorclip.com/show_part_...duct_line=Ring

Shock OD = 50mm
Existing clip thickness .060"

Sorry, can't measure groove width without dissasembling

Default busted c clip

Hello all. I was trying to install a set of these and while raising the height of one of the fronts (with the car jacked up)the c clip popped out of its groove. My setup:

NB bilstien sports (used)
Silver civic/integra sleeves discussed in this thread
400lb 7" qa1 spring
Qa7 thrust bearing

The car is a 2002 if that matters

My questions are
1. Is it safe/smart to just get another clip, or should I replace the shock?

2. People have ran much more spring on the c clip, leading me to believe that I did something wrong when adjusting these. Do you have to completely remove the shock assembly to adjust the height ? Thanks for your help!

No you shouldn't have to remove the shock to adjust the height. Post a picture of your set-up and the issue you're having so we can see exactly how you have it installed.

Is the groove damaged? If not you might be okay with replacing the circlip.

The right way to do it would be to have another groove machined, but I'm pretty sure you can't have that done on a charged shock.

You can if you have a decent machinist who knows how to chuck the part. But I'm surprised that clip would just "pop out".

Like to see some pics.

It looks like there's rust in the groove, could that be part of the problem?

And here's some of the shock installed:

Thanks for the quick replies!

I guess it could if the circlip is what rusted and weakend. There's not much depth to the groove.

I'd clean the groove and replace the clip with a new one and grease the groove to keep corrosion from reappearing.

Some of the eBay kits come with these washers angled to bite into the clip and give a little more surface area. Did yours?

If anyone cares bilstein sells the perch clips as 46mm exterior clips but the 46mm is referring to the internal valve size of the shock. It was throwing me off because i kept measuring about 50mm and couldn't figure out why they didnt sell that size. Now to find a better fitting coilover that wont eat them like the last set did. I wish the obx kit was still available.

Has anyone tried this sleeve? I know its not ebay but its cheap and from what i read it slides past the perch clip and has a lip inside that mounts on it so should allow for more height adjustment than my ebay setup did. Race-Mart RM9964162 Aluminum Coil-Over Sleeve 5" Bilstein / Koni / Penske

yea, these look identical to the All-star performance sleeves I had. They are good. C-clip seat is on the inside, so the sleeve is a tad on the wide side. If they are particularly long, they will rub on the spring. don't get the 7" ones, they are way too big. the 5" is probably a good fit on NB Bilsteins, but I don't know about the NAs. The lip might give you a half-inch or so lower, so its not significant. Lastly, make sure you put the sleeve on the right way, otherwise it will probably get damaged and slide off.

I don't know how low you are looking, but most of these NB bilstein setups are going to be limited to no lower than ~12.25-12.5" without extended top hats...

EBay sleeves and having new grooves machined is probably going to be cheaper than that, and you get the address bonus of being able to choose exactly where the sleeve sits.

I think maybe i just need to try another sleeve because the current ones i have aren't exactly tight on the shock body. I used a bike inner tube to hold them snug. They did a couple track days and maybe 10k miles of driving with me. Then i sold the car and now 3 years later i bought them back for my new miata and after 2 days of driving on them i hit a pot hole that caused my sleeve to pop the snap ring out and let the sleeve bottom out.

before the pot hole

this is after the pothole

Odd, not sure
your going to find anyone on eBay that will measure anything for you. If you need insurance buy some 50mm split shaft collars to clamp under the clip. Little pricey but they work. Or you could try collars in 1-15/16 or 2" to save a few bucks.

You can get what you need at McMaster Carr.
