Default Proper depower question(s)

I have a spare PS rack from a 95 that I want to pull apart. Today at work I saw something about how the 95-97 pinions have to be pressed in/out and that you don't have to weld the pinion gear. Should I go ahead and try to press out the pinion and get it welded?

I saw it in a hustler thead, so it does seem like I might have lucked out... but on the other hand... it is hustler so... (jk <3)

Second Q: what type of grease should I use to repack the rack?

e: I'm aware of the FM guide and plan on using that for instructions with emergency googling waiting in the deck.

I can't help ya on your first question, cuz mine is a 90 and it's the only one I've done, but for the second question, I just used wheel bearing grease and have had no issues.

I've done a '93, '97, and a '99. Never had to press anything out. Good whack with a hammer, but no presses. Only welded my '99s and haven't driven it yet, so no word on that yet. I've just used grease and lathered it on. Never had an issue. Debated on putting a zerk fitting on my '99s just so I can add later. No idea if it's needed, just have several extra fitting laying around.

As was mentioned above... you shouldn't have to press anything out... It should come right out with a slight whack from a hammer.

White lithium grease ... or premium red grease... either one will work. You really don't need to add grease zerks... just lube it up good before you put it all back together.

I welded my pinion shaft.... some people don't.
