Default driveshaft (halfshaft?) compatibiltiy

My kit car has custom length drive shafts due to the off centre diff mounting running standard 1.8 cv joints (push in type). I fancy switching to a flange type cv as it will make pulling the diff easier if/when needed (not much working room).

I understand the 1.8 push in and flange types are compatible as a complete assembly but what about the shaft itself - is that identical?

Are you asking if you can take the CV's apart and swap them over? I think thats possible but I want to say that the 94-95 axles have shorter shafts because the flange takes up more length.

Mazda's parts catalog lists a different number for the early ('94-'95.5) shaft that goes with the flange vs. the later one (''95.5+) that goes directly into an inner CV joint.

So the short answer is that, no, they are probably not interchangeable.

Oh well thanks for the replies. Yes that was the idea leafy. I might buy a buggered one off eBay just to check. Need to replace a cv anyway but looks like ill stick with the push in ones

I stuck with the push in CV's. For the record (because I heard otherwise on another forum) you can strip and rebuild both ends of the cv without any special tools (other then circlip pliar).
